Aahh.. A/C!

So the thermometer hit 88 here, just south of Albany, NY. And so when I got home I went to work installing four out of the five window air conditioning units that make up our system. it took over two hours of lugging around these units and trying to find cords, adapters, duct tape, and whatnot. And now I'm sitting at my computer, eating ice cream, feeling the cool breeze on my back, and posting on NSG. Life is great.

Anyway, it seems that I appreciate the little underpowered window units more when I have to install them myself. Thoughts?

Five? Wow. :p

I used to have a little room AC unit, and enjoyed it very much. I used it to cool the room I spent the majority of my time in, so I didn't have to cool the whole place.

I dislike A/C unless it is oppressively hot. I think I've used it maybe 5x in the last 3 years (including driving)

A little further south of Albany, we have an uninsulated attic, and no AC, so we just bake if it's hot out.

Wow... You know, you could rewire your house for 12-volt power, buy an efficient air conditioner, and live comfortably at a lower cost every month. It's not a hard job to do (my dad did so on my grandmother's two-story), and it really works wonders on ye olde electric bill.

Not to mention your house's climate.

Pff, where I live, 31C isn't really hot for the Summer months. 35 is quite common.

Even still, I can take scorching heat and biting cold, so I guess it's not a biggie.

I have a portable a/c in my living room. Still doesn't do much good.My dumbass self wanted to save a few bucks on my mortgage when I had the place built so I didn't have them install the central air unit. And I've never been able to save enough to buy one.

In Vancouver it will get up to 35/36, but not that often.

Where I am now, it breaks both +40 and and -40.

If your house is built properly (read: well-insulated and with good airflow), and you have an efficient ventilation system, central A/C is the best thing you can get.

It's also a lot less noisy than window units.

It's nice because not only does it cool the air, it dries it out too. *shakes fist at humidity*

Oh I know. Its all ready for it.
Now I just have to try and save the money to buy the unit. When I had it built I figured that I would have the money by the next year for it. But damn things kept coming up.:( I'm shooting for next summer now. Hopefully MN summer won't be too harsh this year.

Minnesota's not looking to be too hot... Yet.

Texas, however, is another story. Pushing shopping carts in the scorching, humid heat is terrible.

I used to live in Texas when I was in tech school for the AF. We had to walk around outside in our uniforms (unless we were there long enough and behaved well enough..then we could go out in public in civilian clothes). This was during the summer months. We all carried a gallon of water on us.

If it wasn't so fucking humid in most of the state, it really wouldn't be such a problem. But, you lose a lot of liquid in the wet, sweltering heat... Much moreso than you would in, say, Las Vegas.

And I was in Las Vegas for around a week and a half in August of 1997. I was outside all day when it reached a hideous 107F, and I didn't need to drink nearly as much water as I do here (Houston) when it's just 92F.

What a bunch of wimps, the lot of you. 88 degrees? It's been that here for months.

I live in Texas, and am happily enjoying the cool low-90's. We'll be breaking the triple digits here before long. That and we've got humidity too; it's been raining a lot this past month.

I can definitely stand the heat (I happen to like the warmth), but I wish it wasn't so fricking wet outside.

I happen to enjoy the rain. I've got a job that is solely dependant on the weather, and if it's raining, no work. :) Course, that probably means my in-box is looking horrific right about now...

I was dying there at 80 degrees lol. I would drink the gallon of water in minutes. But we would have to keep refilling them with cold water because it got warm pretty fast. Luckily we were allowed to make use of the pool. Spent alot of time there.

But the humidity can make for some decent storms. The electrical ones were the best. Got me out of having to run 2 miles in the morning A LOT of the time.:)

What do you mean? No triple digit temperatures in Cincinnati, no sir. It doesn't get that cold either, we can sometimes go a winter with barely any snow accumulation. Much better than dealing with Texas heat.

I definitely wouldn't mind being colder than I was in Colorado Springs. And to be honest, I was kind of underwhelmed --- I thought it'd be a lot colder than it was. Cripple Creek, though, THAT was cold. I think it must've been ten below when I was there, and my coat wasn't exactly working... :p

Yeah we get that cold here alot. But you get used to it. I remember being bitched at by my dad when they were visiting me (when I lived in apartments) because I took the trash outside to the dumpster wearing only my sweat pants and a tank top. The windchill was -23.

I loved Colorado though. Would have made that my permanent home if not for the fact that all my family lives HERE.

It took you two hours? Tisk, tisk. I'll drive up there and show you how to get one in the window in ten minutes. Although I haven't even installed mine yet in my apartment (just one for here in the LR) but it isn't so bad. Turn on the two window fans, the ceiling fan, and the pedestal fan, and I can make it very comfortable in here and use less elecricity (i.e. small bill, Hooah!)
