When Things Go Boom...

Won't this be fun ('http://www.aftenposten.no/english/local/article1814646.ece')

Let's pile up highly enriched uranium and let it dissolve in seawater, and settle where it may...

You have to be careful during the enrichment process not to concentrate too much gas (or liquid, depending on your method of enrichment) in one place. You can get a runaway reaction (at the very least causing a local "beaming" accident as has happened at Rocky Flats in the 1960s), or a chain reaction that causes an actual nuclear explosion (if the initial reaction is tamped under sufficient mass that it can't initially explosively dismantle the area where the reaction begins).

This seems to be something that the Russians should be working on, instead of letting it rot, waiting for something incredibly bad to happen.

Rosatom uses the term "uncontrolled chain reaction" for what will occur.

That made me chuckle.

Yes, well, the Russians have a whole lot of problems to deal with, so their attention is diverted.

As for me, I really don't care all that much so long as it's under control. What amazes me is that the idiotic rabid anti-nuclear peeps aren't all over this pushing it in everyone's faces and ignoring the fact that--once again--it was the fault of idiots who didn't know what they were doing and that trained people wouldn't make the same mistake.

Russia has never proven itself to have its priorities straight, usually due to a lack of unity amongst the populace.

"In the best case a small, limited explosion in just one of the stored rods can lead to radioactive contamination in a five-kilometer (three-mile) radius. In the worst case, such a single explosion could cause the entire tank facility to explode. We have no calculations for what that could lead to," Aleksandr Nikitin of environmental group Bellona told Aftenposten.

When your best case scenario is five kilometers of nuclear contamination, you know someone fucked up.

If my signature was not already cluttered, I would sig that.

In any case, you're completely and totally correct. This is one of the many situations that could have been avoided and should have been avoided. Sadly, that has not been the case...what Russia really needs is a lot of help from Europe and the United States, but won't get it due to both their distrust of us and ours of them.

Uh, no Corny. Luckily enough, internation relations are not that strained between the U.S. and Russia at the moment. There's no evidence to indicate that any nuclear explosion would be anything more than an accident caused by people who didn't know what the fuck they were doing.

Actually, used fuel rods are exactly what we're talking about. Three concrete containers worth of used nuclear submarine fuel rods apparently gone unstable.
