One we had ushers; now, remote shushers

I was scanning my local newspaper when I came across this article about electronic theater iron-fists. They keep people anonymous while cracking down on theater crimes: piracy, talking, using cell phones, etc.

And it makes me wonder... why this has to be necessary. Good idea all around, but upsetting that we need it.

I'm entirely confused. How are they doing this?

What they need to do is get people to turn off their damn cell phones!

I suggest that the theatre have a way to block all cell phone signals from going in and out of the movie theatre, that way no one can make calls, txt, or whatever.

I also think theaters should be able to jam signals. They shouldn't need to police each theater - it's costly and time-consuming.

Isn't blocking the same as jamming?

What are these iron-fists? If they're actual iron fists, which are spring-loaded under each seat and snap up and bash the culprit in the face when they transgress then perhaps, in some cases, they're unnecessary.

I can't see what would crack down on all the examples you've mentioned that helps keep people anonymous?

Care to explain a little more?

You can bet that someone's thought of it already (http://www.halfbakery.com/idea/cineplex_20jerk_20ejector#982947600)...

Could be. Not sure of the technical difference.

They're providing each movie goer with a little hand held device that has buttons on it. One's for sounds, pirating, and things like that. The person reports the disturbance and they have someone come in and handle it.

I assume it's to help people from having tattle-telling confrentations in the theater... but it's still really shameful that it's gotten to this point

It's better than getting stomped by a dozen lowlifes just for politely telling them to shut the fuck up while the movie's playing. I think it's a good idea, but only if combined with security guards who will respond to the complaint with sidearms, PR24 batons, and bullet-proof vests.

You can block cell signals without resorting to electronic jamming. A cell phone is just a tiny radio transmitter, lots of shit interferes with radio waves. Metal is a big one, so is water.

Depends on the wavelength of the signal. Shorter wavelengths (higher frequency) gets blocked more easily, longer wavelengths pass through things much more easily, but move much slower.

Submarines for instance can receive only Extremely Low Frequency signals while submerged to any depth. Anything less than very long wavelength signals won't penetrate all that water.

I'm fairly sure electronic jamming of cell signals is illegal in the states. I know the Israelis make a gizmo that'll do it.

I get payed to be on call ... my phone is ALWAYS turned to silent /vibrate in the theater and yet to be called in while in a movie

That being said i have to make sure that i am reachable while on call, I have made vacation sacrifices because of this before, now I guess I have to stop visiting the theater if they put them in.

Same situation, phone rings I have to answer it. No matter how idiotic the person who pops up on caller ID is.

I only get a text if a server goes down, I dont even have to "answer it" ... yet this device would make no distinction in this case

Yeah we get reports for server down time or phisical problems (flood or heat issues)

With our servers well over the 99.96 up time I think I have only been messaged 3 times in the last 3 years lol

yeah, build a faraday cage around the theatre. some schools do that around exam gyms now to make sure no electromagnetic signals can get in and out.

but that would piss off the people with vibrators... i mean "set to vibrate".

I get calls morning noon and night. Favorite one so far, three AM, guy calls and tells me his fucking wheel fell off.

After my brain booted up I had to call him back and say "Your what fell off?!".

(before I bring up what I'm about to say, I want to let you know that I'm not 'picking on you', this is a general statement)

This brings up another thing: Too much cell phone use. I can understand it being an emergency or a call from work. I can be sympathetic if your ring tone doesn't start blaring and you're not yelling into your phone. But you've gone off to enjoy a movie for an hour or two. If it's not vital that you talk to so-and-so about how great this movie is that you're currently watching, then don't pick up the phone. I'm sure they'll understand when you call back and say "oh I was at the movies".

I think what I'm most worried about with this new device idea is that people are going to report over little shit... In the sense that, "oh I only leaned over to tell my friend that I thought something was just really funny" and a person reported them for being incredibally noisy.
