Italian lifers have asked the president to reinstate the death penalty. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/6707865.stm)

Any thoughts? I am personally opposed to the death penalty, and remain so. But when the people who would be killed actually ask for it, it is harder to say why.

Never mind the ethics of it, it's an easy way out/

The lifers have asked for it because they hate being caged like animals. To me, that's a very good reason NOT to have the death penalty - the fact that life inprisonment is harsher.

Italians kind of have a huge landmark which they light up every time someone is executed in opposition to the death penalty. I doubt that they're going to go back on that.
