A fair number of Islamic countries have religious police.

If we're going to fight against the oppression of women by religious police who are an official arm of the government, we have a lot of other countries to deal with.

Something tells me we're only in Afghanistan to fight against the Taliban, who are hardline supporters of al-Qaeda.

Nope. Went in there to show that being involved with bombing the US on that scale has serious consequences. Any chance of anything else coming out of it went tits up when the Chimp fucked off to Iraq.

More than what I said previously, we're also committed in the region, and governmental inertia is likely to keep us committed regardless of any other factors. It's not so much a conscious decision to stay, as it is just habit.

I heard about this last year; then very brief international uproar. I recall Afganistan backing down.

The articles are July and August 06, also make me wonder how up to date the facts are.

That Rambo that was set in Afghanistan sucked. Especially the scene with the tank and the chopper playing frikkin chicken.

Regional stability.

Yep.

But if an hugely oppresive government can offer that, as long as it's not massively anti west, I say we give the people the oppression they want.

It's a win win, no major threat, no more armed forces occupying Iraq.

Human growth hormone, market surveys, and the need to get a last few bob in the bank seem to have all come together to make the answer to that "Yes".

I thought it was because of 11/09 attack? for the record, the Afghan people -or the Taliban- did not destroy the WTC.. It was a well financed Group of Saudi Arabians (AQ) hiding in the border of Pakistan/Afghanistan.

While they were hiding in those mountains.. both the Pakistani Army and the US Army tried to capture Osama and the other Leaders.. they never succeeded. There is no reason to believe the underfunded Afghans would have been able to succeed where the Pakistanis/US armies failed.

Ironically because they thought that the collateral damage would be too high.

They have the rising regional power Iran forcing the region (mainly Saudi Arabia) to purchase all the military equipment.

Nope. It was due to Pakistani regime's "sensibilities" and the promises that Musharraf made that he would do the job.

There is no other reason why US/NATO did not follow OBL into FATA.

And yes, that means taxpayer $ of the U.S. and other countries involved in the "joint operation".

And yes, still, it means that we're essentially giving them money so they can reinforce their infrastructure, recruit, arm, and plan.
Way to fucking go.
