What do you think this US soldier is doing (and by extension, what are the Iraqis in the picture doing, including the boy behind the soldier)?

It looks like the kid is hiding behind the soldier amid the confusion. I suppose RO is going to give us a headline from a Middle East tabloid (Iranian probably) that suggests otherwise?

Or show us a similiar picture of an IDF soldier and use it as absolute proof the IDF never use human shields.

Second one, people are running, and the kid's behind the soldier, but doesn't look like pickpocketing (though I'm no expert sticking your head next to the pocket doesn't seem the best way to do it).

Well, I'm a news editor, although I'm only the press manager of a radio station, and that doesn't make me very accurate labeling pictures. As Captain Obvious would say, we're on the radio business do not use a lot of pictures in our news reports.

But I can tell you something, I would dismiss the picture as not being news at all. It isn't a shocking picture, and it isn't even self explanatory. I wouldn't use that picture for nothing. The soldier doesn't even look alert, he looks just in patrol.

If there was a burning vehicle in frame, or a blown up market with dead dismembered bodies everywhere, that would be news.

If you can't see what people are running from, it's not news.

The soldier is not even on a combat stance...And people are running, but they do not look desperate. The photo isn't shocking, there are always a lot of better pictures out there, that are shocking without the need of showing blood, dismembered corpses, or fires as you might think. If you're not going to like a professional opinion when you ask about the picture, please do not ask. People doesn't read minds to find exactly what answer you are looking for, and even if they do, they might do not want to say it, anyway.

I don't know, for me, Iraq stopped to be a news time ago. It will be news again when the american troops retire from there. Actually, I could have a headline as "Violence strikes in Iraq again" as a sticky in front of my news report everyday. Such a novelty, those.

I already know what the uniform is.

The US Army and USMC have radically changed their uniform camo patterns over the past few years.

Desert camo was eliminated.

Body armors are also changing rapidly, as are helmets.

In search of lighter, more protective armor, and more effective camo without having to change uniforms everytime you change environment.

Here's the latest US Army armor (and camo pattern)

i wouldnt caption a picture unless i knew what was going on. anything else would violate journalistic ethics.

it doesnt look like anything bad is going on. the kid is acting goofy with the soldier. the street is a mess. people arent in a panic. maybe the kid is trying to not be seen by someone so he is hiding behind the soldier. or maybe he is hoping the soldier will keep his mom from giving him a whipping in the street for cutting the tail off the cat.

no way to know unless someone says eh?
