Ga. judge: Keep Potter books in school

2 hours, 15 minutes ago

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The adventures of boy wizard
Harry Potter can stay in Gwinnett County school libraries, despite a mother's objections, a judge ruled Tuesday.

Laura Mallory, who argued the popular fiction series is an attempt to indoctrinate children in witchcraft, said she still wants the best-selling books removed and may take her case to federal court.

Too bad that the judges around here are all morons. Lord of the Rings is not allowed in schools throughout the county because a bunch of retarded people who saw the damn movies wanted the 'violent and gory literature' taken from schools. The books are nothing... even when compared to the movie which by many standards... was nothing.

Wacky, but at least consistent. I've seen people who were opposed to the Harry Potter books because they were about witchcraft, but thought Narnia was just fine, since it was religious allegory. The fact that witchcraft is found in both didn't seem to phase them.

At Tuesday's hearing, Mallory argued in part that witchcraft is a religion practiced by some people and, therefore, the books should be banned because reading them in school violates the constitutional separation of church and state.

"I have a dream that God will be welcomed back in our schools again," Mallory said. "I think we need him."

She says she wants separation of Church and state, yet thinks we need god back in schools....

No-- here's how it's goign to go!

Laura Mallory will ambush Hermione in the "final battle", supposedy over Harry. Harry and Ron will come to Hermione's defense. Harry will figure out that Mallory is under the Imperious Curse and is actually a lesbian. Ron will "avada kedavra" Mallory, Harry will use her head to slay Voldemort, and Ron and Hermione will elope and live happily ever after. While Harry marries Ginny a year afterward. Ginny Weasley, I mean, not my Ginny Croswell. Though that would be awesome... but JKR might not appreciate that and it won't really fit into "Persephone Skye" anyway...

That's what I've read as well. Apparently, he didn't like the blatant allegory. He also didn't like the fact that Narnia wasn't a very consistent world - Lewis wrote quickly and didn't worry about internal consistency in the books. Tolkien, on the other hand, was obsessed with making sure that Middle Earth was consistent - that it was an entirely fleshed out world and that no details in one book contradicted those of another.

Amazing how different things are from one place to another.

My boy was 9 when his teacher decided she was too lazy to teach class that day and the kids could all just sit about watching PGR13 Lord of the Rings. I wasnt impressed. In the first place I dont send my child to school to watch videos all day - he could do that home (if I were inclined to let him). Secondly I think it's up to individual parents to decide if they want their child watching a movie that is rated above thier age and recommended to only be watched by children of 9 (if at all) with parental guidence. How the hell am I to give guidence on a movie I've never seen anyway?

Yes, because the disney Aslan had no balls.
“It was just a matter of going through every scene with a fine tooth comb, painstakingly removing all the little bits of magic that might of accidentally got transferred from the book to the screen.

About ten years ago, that would have took... fucking ages, but now with computers it’s really very easy to create a load of incredibly dull creatures who are so realistically crap, the audience genuinely believes they’re watching some very early tests for Lord Of The Rings.

The final thing was to find someone to do the voice of Aslan, the digital dog. Of course, Aslan was based on Jesus The Christ, so that was a potentially dangerous magical area which we dealt with by hiring Liam *yawn* Neeson. I knew he’d be great because Liam *yawn* Neeson tends to get rid of all the magic in everything he touches, and sure enough, as soon as he started speaking, the very last magical dingleberries were wiped clean of Narnia‘s arsehole.”

More into burning than reading I see?Ok, I know who Paul is. It's the dude who justified his redefining of Jesus' teachings by an alleged fall from horseback.
And burning of certain things is indeed a good thing.

I Have No Knowledge Of A Biblical GodAs if Paul's scribbling really changed anything abut the theology of the biblical god. The entire New testament is only a funny but unnecessary appendix to the Old Testament. The worshiped deity is still the fabricated Jew-ish god. So no new territory there.

Actually, as an atheist, I view Paul’s letters in the NT as the closest approximation to the early Christian ‘church’ there is. They were written far earlier than any of the Gospels.

Moreover, the God of the NT is a very different chap to the grumpy bastard of the OT.

I mean, it’s in such a large font, it must be true.According to the bible itself, it is the same god. And that's what we are talking about.
And the fact that this god is a fabrication is not influenced by font sizes.

Well I was talking about Alan’s balls, but some people have no taste.

Anyhoo, if you don’t believe in a biblical God, why dogmatically follow what the Bible says?

Why not point out the obvious; that the OT and NT gods are very different?

And in the films, young Emma Watson who, at the ripe old age of 17 has already featured in FHM’s 100 Sexiest Women in the World, and has had her bust enhanced in the most recent Harry Potter poster.

This story has had a lot more play locally. And that doesn't make it any less stupid. Truly all that is required is for this woman to tell her kids, "No, you can't read the Harry Potter books".

Or, even better, get over herself and recognize that there isn't anything wrong with them. This woman probably does more damage to her children every day than reading a story ever would...

From a utilitarian perspective, this is a totally frivolous case. From a personal moral perspective, answers may vary. Even from my moral perspective, though, I think this woman is wasting her time. Might as well ban LotR and Chronicles of Narnia, then, because they can get dark and sometimes scary, too.

They should add a couple of shots of a banana slapping itself in the face during the battle of Helm's Deep--just to lighten the mood. :D

Oh the humanity!

No, wait... What's that other word?

'Stupidity." Oh the stupidity. And Hypocrisy.

There are three ohs. Oh the humanity, stupidity, and hypocrisy. That's it. Just those three.

You know, large quantities of reading helps our language skills. Clearly we need to force this woman to read the books!

I maybe need a whole new case from the ground up.

As for logical skills, well... I suppose the books can't help there.

^As has been pointed out quite a few times before.

Further opinion:
County school board members have said the books are good tools to encourage children to read and to spark creativity and imagination.
^ Go school board

Victoria Sweeny, an attorney representing county school officials, said the judge has to respect their authority to leave the books on library shelves.

"I'm not here to defend Harry Potter," Sweeny said. "I'm here to defend the Gwinnett County Board of Education's right to make lawful decisions."

Makes one wonder about a number of sci-fi or fantasy books. Are sci-fi books with aliens in them teaching "our children" to become Raelians? :P

Actually

The frame of Ms. Watson was taken, I have heard, from the IMAX image... and IMAX is in a different proportion which appears to stretch the image width-wise on a normal screen.

IMAX screens are curved, remember.

More discussion on it (I'll have to see where the original explanation came from....)

For your information Barbie, Wicca is listed under Neo-Paganism, which is a revival movements of old pagan traditions like Druidism, Celtic, and others. If you don't believe me, then check out these links, which list Wicca under the Neo-Pagan umbrella.

Ga. judge: Keep Potter books in school

Good for the judge! If this idiot doesn't want her kids reading the books, then that's her problem (and since she's hell bent on censoring it, you can bet they will do their damnedest to get it and read it. There's nothing that sells like the forbidden).
