2016 Olympic Bids

IDF

Which of these four cities is the best candidate? Other cities are considering it, but only these four have made it official.

I'm of course biased since I live in the Chicago area, so you can guess what my choice is.

It probably will be either Chicago or Rio. Prague won't get it because the 2004 and 2012 Olympics will have both been in Europe. Tokyo probably won't get it because Asia is getting the 2008 games. This means the 2016 games will most likely be in the Americas. If a viable African candidates comes forward, they will have a good shot too.

Chicago is IMO the best choice for many reasons. The primary reason is they can guarantee to get everything done and won't have to worry about working with various mayors. Barring an untimely death or the more likely scenario of prison,Hizzoner Da Mayor Richard M Daley will likely be in office as no one except a federal prosecutor will ever unseat the Daley machine.

Daley has complete control of the city and his party has the vast majority of them are on Daley's side and that won't ever change. He can pretty much guarantee he will be there to oversee everything and he has the political power to get anything done. I doubt many cities have the sort of government that can guarantee that. It might be the only positive attribute of having a political boss in power.

A second major advantage is the fact that Chicago has many venues available. They probably only need to build one more sports structure. We have Soldier Field, Toyota Park, United Center, Allstate Arena, Wrigley Field, and Comiskey Park. McCormick Place can be used for some of the indoor events. Nearby Northwestern University, Northern Illinois University, and Notre Dame also offer possible venues.

A third advantage is the beauty and cleanliness of the city. Chicago is one of the cleanest major cities you can find. It is devoid of smog and is absolutely beautiful during summer. The lake is magnificent crystal clear. Grant Park is full of lush green grass. I honestly don't feel like I'm in a huge metropolis when I'm in Chicago. With neighborhoods like Hyde Park, Wrigleyville, and Old Town, you sometimes feel like you're in a town rather than a city.

Prague.

Most certainly.

Too bad we picked Chicago over Philly.. :(

What, no Hoboken? Not even Scranton?

Well, I guess Chicago then. I guess there's some interesting attractions there. It's conveniently located near Tinley Park and Joliet, so there might be some entertainment to be found.

Beside, Chicago should be boycotted for what they did to Meigs Field.

If the Olympic committee gives the Olympics to another city, and if Chicago ask why, they should point towards the park that was Meigs Field.

and especially when eaten at the Original Pizzeria Uno (not the shitty chain), Giordanos, Edwardo's, or Lou Malnatti's.

Oh and it's a requirement to order a hamburger, fries, and pepsi at The Billy Goat Tavern. Some people who've seen and old SNL skit with John Belushi will be in for a pleasent surprise.

You must admit, though - that's some prime real estate.

In 2001, a compromise was reached between Chicago, the State of Illinois, and others to keep the airport open for the next twenty-five years. However, the federal legislation component of the deal did not pass the United States Senate.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meigs_Field#Closing_of_Meigs_Field

It doesn't matter if it was 'prime real estate' Mayor Daley made a promise to keep the field open until 2026, in exchange, O' Hare airport would get another runway (which is what Daley wanted).

However on March 30th 2003, Mayor Daley took construction equipment to the field at night and carved Xs into the runway. In Aviation a yellow X painted onto a runway would mean that the runway is closed. What Daley did was not only a safety hazard to any aircraft that may have tried to land there after the X's been carved, but also a federal offense since operators of airports are required to give NOTAMs (Notice to Air Men) about any changes to the airport structure (or closing) at least 30 days in advance.

So I guess Daley doesn't have any respect for keeping promises or laws either. He's just like a bratty little 3 year old kid.

Of course, he's a Daley. As bad as he is, his father, Richard J Daley, was a whole lot worse. He gave shoot to kill orders to policemen during riots, was a horrible family man, and was so close to the mob that he was practically Sam Giancana's right hand man.

It's all in Royko's legendary unauthorized biography "Boss."

Fitzgerald is investigating Daley and one of Daley's buddies just took a hard fall into a District Court. We can only hope he will get busted, but we of course know it won't happen because Daley is just too powerful and has too many buddies who will take the fall for him.

His father could've probably been arrested for murder, but he only left office when he died of a heart attack.

This may be the only time when I wish Harvey Lee Oswald was still alive.Mike Sweeney almost did the job on Mother's Day. I was at the Sox game to see it. Daley has season tickets just next to the dugout and one of the pink bats they were using slipped out of Sweeney's hands and flew towards Daley. Unfortunately former Sox player and 1983 AL Rookie of the Year Ron Kittle deflected the bat so it didn't hit Daley. If he wasn't there, Daley would've been nailed in the head. I of course didn't know that the person who was nearly hit by the bat was Daley until I got home and saw the replay.

It could also be interesting if it went to Africa or the Middle East. Kenya is thinking of bidding (http://www.gamesbids.com/cgi-bin/news/viewnews.cgi?category=1&id=1105559275), as are Doha and Dubai.

But before that, we'll know who's going to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games. It's down to two candidates (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Commonwealth_Games): Abuja and Glasgow.

There's no way Kenya can host an Olympics, they don't have the infrastructure. And as for Dubai or Doha, Qatar -- are they nuts? Let's set aside the volatility of the region for a sec, and ask who would want to hold the Olympics in the desert?

Qatar is an island and Dubai has some nice coastal regions, but I do agree that the security situation would be a nightmare. While they are generally moderate nations, they still have far too many wackos who would see the Olympics as a target to fight the West.

Which would be stupid because the Olympics is a world wide event, not just a 'west' event.

I didn't think the U.A.E. had many people with particularly strong anti-West feelings. Nor Qatar, for that matter. But there would still have to be high security, yes.

Qatar is not an island, that's Bahrain. Qatar is a peninsula.
