In the movie Addicted to Love (it's hard to make a comedy about stalking...maybe a dark comedy, but a romantic comedy...nope) has a great scene where the photographer former boyfriend/stalker sets up a telescope with a photo enlarger so that his ex-girlfriend's apartment is projected on the wall of his rented space. After setting up the projection he starts painting the wall white where she is standing and then follows her through her apartment, painting the wall as she moves about.

Of course, until I typed this out I didn't realize how crude it sounds to say while watching a woman through her window a man 'painted the walls white.'

Aside from that kinda gross implication, it still was a well shot scene. Same cinematographer as LA Story, which was shot well. That guy doesn't work as often as he should.

There's a scene in PCU where Jeremy Piven is asked what it was like to share a room with the uptight villain, David Spade. It flashes back to a headgear wearing Spade trying in bed as a drunk Piven stumbles in with a woman and ends up standing over Spade shouting "GO TO SLEEP! GO TO SLEEP!" and then flashes forward. "It was hell, man." It was a nice play on expectations of the audience. Doesn't make the movie worth watching, though.

This morning Orange County (a movie, not the equally mediocre drama) was on cable, and a few bits at the beggining were amusing, before it slid into the standard coming-of-age/road-trip cesspool. Primarily, this line:
English Teacher: "His name is William Shakespeare. And some great movies have been made based on his plays: Hamlet, West Side Story, The Talented Mr. Ripley, Waterworld, Gladiator..."

The protagonists of True Romance may be the most annoying pair of white trash morons one can find outside of a midnight run to Wal-Mart, but the villains were pretty cool. Especially when this guy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dr3x_lZYICg) punches Alabama. His facial expression as she falls, priceless.
Brad Pitt's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1VpXlKp5fg) scenes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObU-wa6_2gU) are also pretty amusing.

for me... I go for more lines than scenes.
John Carpenter's The THING: They just sliced off one of the infected men's head, and as it rolled on the floor, from the neck's opening, several spider-like legs sprouted and two 'Eyes' on stalks. then the head proceeded to scurry away. I just like the last lines of that movie...

Sam: So I saw this episode of "Lassie" today. And Lassie was accused of a crime she didn't commit, and the Ranger was coming to put her to sleep.
Maggie: Uh-oh. How's Lassie going to get out of this one?
Sam: Well, the little boy told Lassie that she had to go away, far away.
Maggie: For her own good.
Sam: Yes, but you see, Lassie couldn't leave. Lassie just couldn't leave the boy.
Maggie: What did he do?
Sam: He told her he never liked her. He said, "I hate you, Lassie. I hate you. You're a bad dog."
Maggie: That must have made Lassie sad.
Sam: Yes, it did. Lassie trotted off, very sadly. But you know what happened? Lassie came home, Maggie.
Maggie: Did the little boy make it with Lassie?
Sam: Yes. Yes he did.

It's my least favorite, except for "Jersey Girl," which I still haven't seen. I like that he was able to do a lot with such a tiny budget--somewhere under $300K, I believe--but when I see a Kevin Smith movie, I'm in it for the dick and fart jokes. It's what he does best.

Then you're really not going to like Jersey Girl.I suspected as much, which is why I've avoided it. That's not to say I think he can't do anything other than dick and fart jokes. The jail conversation scene in "Clerks II" between Dante and Randal is touching, and it's a really long scene, which is tough to pull off in a movie that's just taken you from Kinky Kelly and the Sexy Stud. But I think he has trouble when he tries to do a film that focuses on the touching instead of using it as a counterpoint.

I think that Clerks II was sort of an admission and coming to terms with the fact that that is the only kind of film from him people will accept. He does, as silly and pretentious as this sounds especially when talking about a guy who peaked at dick and fart jokes, but he does interrogate himself as an artist with his films. I would really love to see him take on a comics-based film, as he has such a love for the genre, and I think that passion could carry him, help him overcome his weaknesses, as long as he had someone who knew the FX end of the deal. He strikes me as the kind of writer who wouldn't fall in love with the CGI so much that he'd lean on it, and if he did something like Green Arrow where the extraordinary takes a back seat to the story, he might really impress at it.

Or he might pull a Lucas and shit all over the patio furniture. You don't know until you see the product.

He chickened out of doing The Green Hornet, which is too bad. If anyone was going to find what is compelling about that character it might have been him. I wonder if there is a way to find his Superman script...

What, like Westerns, or Romantic Comedies, or Horror Films, or Cop Movies, or...are we going to quota things now? We want only 8 Romantic Comedies, 5 Horror Films, 6 Childrens Films, and 8 Cop Movies this year.

Comics are fertile ground, it only makes sense that there is a lot to come from there. I don't know where a criteria would come from that, no-we can't have anymore regardless of quality, Pathfinder took your spot, sorry.

What's 'overdone'? How many is some magical number that makes it 'just enough?' Is it different for different types of movies? What would be the filter, is it like fishing where the first one to limit ends it? If you don't release your comic book based movie by August the quota is full and we've moved into 'overdone?' Is it weighted on audience? "Sorry, 300 and Spiderman 3 took the comic book audience share, you'll have to wait two years."

Sorry, this seems to arbitrary to me.

There has been just as many, if not more, horror films, or cartoons, certainly more romantic comedies. The quality of the film should be what determines whether it's in good taste or not, not its quantity.

Unless you're a projectionist, there isn't anything forcing you to watch every single comic book film. I advise against it. There's a really easy move here for you, only go to as many as you feel is appropriate. If someone's got a quality effort coming down the pipe, I wouldn't want him to stop because Pathfinder already came out and filled some imaginary quota.

There's nothing wrong with an abundance of choices if you're going to a 700-screen theater. My local 8 tends to get clogged with low-quality comic book films though, so I'm sort of interested in variety. Not that I mind comic book movies, but when studios are rushed to strike while the iron's hot, we often end up with lower quality as well. That benefits no one.

Pronoun trouble. If you hadn't been in such a hurry you'd have caught the edit.

And I still think that that is a shockingly limited and arbitrary concept that ignores that other types of films are more if anything prevelent and that quality and interest be the only inhibitor.

I would only call O Brother Where Art Thou mediocre if you're comparing it to, oh, The Big Lebowski. In other words, if you limit yourself to the universe of great Coen brothers movies instead of, say, the universe of all Coen brothers movies, then it might come off as mediocre, but outside of that, I don't know how it could be considered mediocre.

In comparison to the entire catalogue, I'd say it's a bit mediocre. Blood Simple, Barton Fink, Lebowski, Miller's Crossing, Raising Arizona, Fargo, etc. Great scenes - several, even. But as a whole, spotty, even outside the Cohens.

I'd never heard of the "I'm the juggernaut, bitch" movie before I saw X3. When I first saw that scene, I immediately thought that that line is so clumsy, that it has to be an inside joke of some sort, which it turned out it was. And because it sticks out like that, it really sucks as an inside joke.

And still chase scene from Matrix Reloaded.

Not the best scene from the movie, but one of the better ones(and probably the only one that wasn't a trailer or "music video")

That was just silly.

So would I. Compared to that, even the most repulsive and drab movie can seem acceptably mediocre.

Oh, go watch The Phantom Menace.

Fearless was mediocre because of its inability to not bounce around in a time line like a blacking out drunkard, but the fight scenes were bad ass. Especially this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwPJspVmxAw&mode=related&search=)

The Phantom Menace was poor too, but primarily because it was such a contrived and staccatto plotline.

Lebowski was that (being explicitly somewhat plagarist in the process, even), but also a painful parading of a bunch of worthless hicks as though they were some sort of determined heroes. The film was based around character interaction. I have never been so repulsed by the depiction of a group of human beings before, and watching them being flaunted as protagonists was like a snuff film; a film purely designed to depict the death of human existence.

Maybe it's an American thing I'm not getting, and I'm quite prepared to admit the possibility. Is there some level I don't understand? Because, quite frankly, that people like that exist is something I mourn, not celebrate or make fun of, and if all there is to it is the exposition of its cast and a dull, predictable plotline, then it has the entertainment value of a funeral.
