Gulf of Tonkin Falsehoods

I was just having a discussion with my sister about the Gulf of Tonkin, what are some of the falsehoods behind the government's story, she claimed that there were numerous ones, but I do not know any.
The fact that the ship that was attacked apparently never found out until afterwards. My dad's friend was on that ship, or so he says. :p (old man stories not always plausible)

"Linkage"? For what?
@ the OP: just go to wiki for a neatly wrapped up overview: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_of_Tonkin_Incident

I don't want to look up everything posted. It's more of a courtesy for the reader.

thanks everyone, I just was looking on the net, apparently nearby where the Maddox was attacked, the US had been shelling two days prior, so it was possible that the NV were just attacking pre-emptively (but we all know what happens when you do that)

i highly recommend watching "fog of war"
a documentary conversation with robert mcnamara that covers the build up of the vietnam war including the gulf on tonkin resolution. he was secretary of defense under kennedy and johnson.
and he served in ww2 and discusses the firebombing of japan and the decision to drop the Abomb.
and was in on the cuban missle crisis.
its way worth watching.
