Question #1: That deals with the Prophet Mohammed. The split occured over who they wanted to succeed Mohammed.

Question #2: No. It is not worth fighting over. However, to them, it is worth fighting over and when they do, civilians get hurt :(

of course they aren't worth fighting over. I also don't think that they just fight over that, i think it's just part of the cause and it's probably also used as an excuse to start wars for economic and political reasons.
it's also not only the muslims fighting over stuff like that, christians have done it too (and i guess they aren't the only ones)

Uh, lets see.

There's Shiia, Sunni, and I know that it's either Oman or Yemen that practices a sort of relaxed form of Islam if you will.

Then of course, there's Saudi Arabia...

There are the sufi as well. You often see them spinning around in circles. Also in each main sect there are radical groups, conservative groups, and moderat groups.

same reason that Christians and every other organized religion split up...people corrupt and complicate a religion and get into arguments over the small differences...but according to wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Islamic_sects) the difference between the Sunni and Shia is that the Sunni believe that Muhammad died without appointing a successor to lead the Muslim community. The believe that Ali was appointed by Muhammad to be the direct successor and leader of the Muslim community...don't know about Sufi's or any other denomination...

Those are the two very general sects in Islam, but like any faith with over one billion adherents, there are many more, smaller, sects. The Druze, as mentioned above, the Alawites, the Kharijites and so on. Some of them generally belong to one or the other of the large sects. Islam is quite diverse in thought, while usually retaining the core beliefs, as in Christianity.

I really hope that's a joke.

LancasterCounty is right; the disagreement was over Muhammad's succession. I believe the Suni wanted an elected successor, while the Shiites felt it should be a descendant of Muhammad. Sunni is a much larger sect, and has something like 80 or 90% of Muslims in it. Shiite is more prevelant around Iran, Iraq, etc.

Perhaps we should be looking at the Protestant/Catholic divide in Northern Ireland. They seemed to think religion was worth fighting over.

How I imagine it is Shia and Sunni are like the Catholic and Protestant of the Islamic world. I believe that the Shia that the leader of the Islamic spiritual community should be the heir of Muhammad, the heir of Bin Ali who was killed many years ago. The Sunni's believe that the spiritual leader should be chosen by the whole Islamic community. So it's a crisis of leadership that has been boiling over since Muhammad died.

Shiite is @ 13%. Sunni is about 85%! These numbers vary however.

It has do with this, who succeded Mohammad?
Was it his daughter? Pro: his direct off-spring, Con: woman :(.
Or his brother? Pro Male :(, Con: NOT off-spring, just brother.

Is it worth fighting over? Not unless you're retarded. But the growth is somewhat over there, and they are going through the dark-ages. Remember, the Christians fought the 30-Year-War, which killed HALF of Germany's population, so no-one is free from their dark-age.

Sunni and Shia is very broad and generic..

sufis, barelvis, deobandis, bohra, ithna ashari, ismaili, ahmadi, quadiani etc etc....there are just groups/sects of subcontinental muslims..

muslims are by no means monolithic

Druze believe in reincarnation.

They are considered heretics by both shais and sunnis.
