3 is too many but it really depends on your circumstances.

id say 1 per 1000sq ft of living space with fractions rounding up. so if you have 1900 sq ft, you get 2 cats but 2100 sq ft can support 3.

and as morthy said, kittens dont count.

I have 2 adults in a normal sized home, and it's fine. I'm sure I could fit in a 3rd, but that would be pushing it a tad. 4 wouldn't work well.

My friend out of town however has 4 cats, but he lives in a big house so it's ok.

Still... that's a lot of cats.

Even 0 cats is too many when you start captioning them.

Otherwise how many cats is acceptable depends on the number of people living with you. The Cat to Human ratio should never exceed 2:1, doing so is just begging for a revolution of the Purrletariat.

So long as you can care for them all, feed them, and ensure a happy life, with plenty of room, have as many cats as you like.

Me, I doubt I could ever care for more than three, so I voted three, though probably just one'll do, what with Sokkwi being the way he is and all. Something misfired in his brain at birth, and he'll randomly switch between rearing up at random objects and tossing rugs across the room and being the most adorable lap cat rubbing his face all over your own I've ever seen.
Jello Biafra
25-05-2007, 02:29
I voted the second to last option on the poll, but really it's however many that you can't take care of them all.

I would suggest also that if you have to put them in cages, that's too many, even if you are taking care of them.

They can roam around the backyards of the neighborhood...

We had two cats that regularly slept and ate in our house, and then maybe five or six cats who we fed once in a while and were taken care of by the entire block.

I have four. Clyde, the one male among the females, has no problem. Bonnie thinks that more than one cat is too many, as does Persephone. Emma doesn't care as long as she gets food and petting.

I personally think two cats is more than enough, one would be ideal. As I get older I find the idea of cleaning litter boxes, paying vet's bills and feeding four cats four different diets to be oppressive. I look forward to having only one.

Depends on the cat. Oddly enough, I have two cats, and both would rather be 'only' cats. My Siamese tries to assault my Maine Coon repeatedly (we're pretty sure it's sexual assault as well despite both being fixed.) But at least the Siamese, a.k.a. the heaviest cat I've ever seen that isn't on the Bad Cat calendar, is good with our dog; otherwise, I'd probably kill him.

For nice, pleasant cats that get along, there can be no upper limit. For the demonspawn that I have, one is plnty and two is bordering on insane.

Personally, I would rather have a dog. Realistically, no one should have more cats/dogs/budgies/gold fish etc than they can effectively care for and feed. Just acquiring as many animals as you can because it has a cute face or any other reason does the animal no favour if they are not adequately feed and housed (including vet care, neutering or responsible breeding, etc). For the average person any more the 3 of anything is pushing things.

I have no problem with cats, as long as they are someone else's.

I dont care for cats,so one would be too many for me.

We had a cat for 6 years and though we took good care of it, it did nothing more than co-habitate with us. There was no companionship or affection, a moment of petting resulted in being bitten or scratched.
Maybe the cat wasnt well suited for people, though we got her as a kitten.

To me-time and money wasted.

I wouldnt approve another in my home.
