There are lots of great metal bands, so you have to be specific. Do you perfer classic metal, like Iron Maiden? Speed metal, like Dragonforce? Hardcore metal? Power metal? (I'm not really familiar with power metal)

But don't worry about it. You'd need a map to navigate all the subgeneras of music. Speaking of which, someone should make that...

Iron Maiden.

Fuck yeah dude, can never go wrong with Maiden.... unless its Virtual XI

Depends on what you're looking for/can tolerate, if you want heavy but with clean vocals, go with 80s stuff. If you want fast and heavy and with shrieking vocals, black metal.

Some of my favorites are (of course) Iron Maiden, Emperor, Cradle of Filth, Motorhead (not really metal per se), Morbid Angel, and Megadeth.

Scream Bloody Gore - Death

Let's see..

Kreator, as suggested by others. That's crunchy shit that'll make you want to headbang all day.

The obvious bands, like Metallica, Megadeth, Pantera, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, etc. Cannot go wrong with them at all, and I've been on a major Megadeth kick lately. Sweating bullets!

Older In Flames is good, and some of the newer stuff isn't bad.

Iced Earth is a great band, but they got a little corny with the whole 'I love America' thing. *shrugs*

Gwar is hilarious, and some of their songs are actually pretty good, like Immortal Corruptor and War Party.

Eisbrecher is great German industrial, some of their songs could collapse your cranium if you turned them up too loud. Crunchy.

Some harder to find bands such as The Crimson Divine, Atargatis, and Tormented are cool.

Dream Theatre, Liquid Tension Experiment, Vai, Satriani, these guys are all pretty cool and prog-gy.

Blind Guardian, Rhapsody of Fire, Demons and Wizards, Jag Panzer, Hammerfall (kind of), Queensryche (kind of) and Warlord are some recommendations for power-type metal.

Metal Church is old and sounds like it, good stuff.

Oh yah, don't forget Amon Amarth. Great.

There are lots of other good suggestions in this thread, but I know I've only scratched the surface. That's all I can think of off the top of my head that have either not been mentioned or not stressed enough. Warlord might be my favourite band that nobody I know or have met listens too.

Very specific selections from old old Korn is good metal, but you've gotta be willing to wade through a lot of non-metal and non-good to get to it.

Cannibal Corpse is good if you want some thrash metal whose lyrics are almost exclusively about killing and/or digging up people and then eating them. I find it highly amusing in certain moods.

Dark Tranquility is Swedish Death Metal (along with In Flames, At the Gates, and to some extent Arch Enemy and Dissection).

Sodom I think of more as thrash, but since they were a prime influence on basically every black metal band there is, they fit with black metal, too.
