Me and Atopiana are a member of a WW2 re-enacting group who portray the 12th SS Panzer Division "Hitlerjugend." We had our first show the other week and here are some piccies. It was a public show so we got to talk to lots of people about the Waffen-SS and make them learn good about us. Jolly good fun!

Why the fuck would you want to reenact a war?

Ask me in a year and I will e-mail you a copy of my dissertation on the sociology of re-enactment. ;)

In the meantime, some of the reasons include:

It's fun, it's relaxing, it's educational - for us, historians, and the general public - it's keeping alive the memory of all sides in many wars; not all re-enactment is of wars (living history groups vary from fashions to families) and it provides semi-professional extras for Hollywood war films.

Personally, I tried to join the RAF so I could get involved in a real war in 2006 but they laughed me out of the recruitment office when I told them that I had anaphylaxis. :( :p

Awesome dudes! I myself am a collector of militaria. Right now I'm assembling a uniform for a Dutch UN Peacekeeper and a Soviet Cadet (1980's).

There aren't any re-enactor groups I know of dedicated to Peacekeepers or Cold War Russians, but I'm still gonna parade down at this annual military show I go to. You often meet a few dressed in Soviet Cold War gear, but they never get together as a group. Everyone wants to take your photograph!

I love the attention. That and I'd love to teach a few folks a thing or two.

Set one up! :) It's easier than you think - all you need is a name, a sign saying who you are that you can take to shows, and get involved with the re-enactment community. With a website, fairly soon you'll get members and then you can crush the decadent western capitalists with the might of the Red Army. ;)

Seriously, though, set one up, and all the best to you. :D

Well, there was that ground-charge that blew up next to me and the chap on the mortar who had a blank shell go off in his hand... :D

EDIT:

do you guys ever get political flak from re-enacting Germans?

Not usually to our face. Mostly behind our back and/or to the organisers of shows. If I ever get anyone telling me I'm a Nazi I will show them my Industrial Workers of the World card and the 'It's OK, I'm An Anarchist' card I have from The Cunningham Amendment.

I have NEVER seen or heard of ANY complaints about Soviet re-enactment groups... but this isn't the US, so I dunno if that's just 'cause we didn't have McCarthy. ;) :p

The Germans had mounted cav units too. In fact, most of the Wehrmacht was moved around by horses in the early years.

And this is where the myth about Polish cavalry and tanks came from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Krojanty

Put it this way - the Fallschirmjaeger unit that's part of Kp 1 is run by an ex-Royal Marine Commando. In La Columna (Spanish Civil War) there's a man who was in the French Foreign Legion.

I think they've kinda earnt the right to stand around and play at soldiers, no? ;)

Where do I sign up for this reenactment? I want to be in the allied company that's pitted against the Waffen SS's elite asthmatic division.

In all seriousness, I know someone stationed in Korea that's partially colorblind.. I asked him if he had any problem with the light signals they use on any of their machines or ordinance, and he says they pick certain colors to prevent just that.

There's probably not much to be done about the asthma and myopia, though, but give them a couple years and they'll be so desperate they'll be taking people in wheelchairs.

Technically my asthma has improved tremendously, but the British army doesn't take in men that have had a history of asthma. Not that I would want to join the Army.

Nope. I wanted to sail the seas with Her Majesty's Royal Navy throughout childhood, but they don't take even partially colour-blind people in.

And the Air Force, well. Not only am I afraid of flying, they require a person to have unassisted 20/20 vision. Even if you've had corrective eye laser surgery, they won't let you in.
