All Hail Keith!

He is our forum overlord. He sees all. He reads our posts. He watches us as we lurk. Only through chants and the ritual sacrifice of virgin posters will he be appeased.

In all seriousness, while Lord Keith is obviously happy to give out his first name I wouldn't want to divulge even that tiny piece of information about myself. It's odd; although I have nothing to hide, I like the anonymity of the web.

How comfortable do you feel about giving out personal information online, and what are you willing to reveal?

Maybe Keith isn't his real name...
Kyronea
24-05-2007, 13:26
I used to feel comfortable about letting it all out...then I had an admin of some place call me up on the phone, which freaked me out to hell.

...which was probably the idea...

Anyway, I now refuse to give out anything except for my name, Matt Carpenter. Sometimes not even that...I've been known to playact as a lesbian to hide my identity in online games.

...though I always use the name Kyronea everywhere so if anyone ever went onto more than one place that I also go onto I'd be found out...

The True Name of Keith cannot be known my mere mortal posters.

Also, people on NSG don't have real names, any evidence to the contrary is an illusion.

i always say too much in personal posts, and my real name has been chucked around here a fair bit...

i'm not really so fussed about it. websites like myspace and bebo rely on people voluntarily sharing volumes about thier personal lifes

Well, I've been guilty of giving out my first name, picture, and voice clip. Also the city where I live (luckily it's a really, really big one...), the university where I study, the car I drive and probably a handful other assorted tidbits.

Sometimes esp. the picture and name thing make me a bit iffy, but usually I'm pretty trusting.

On another, much smaller and more "trustworthy" forum, we did a big mailing thing once, sending stuff to each other and while the addresses were of course not posted online they were still being "distributed" to the people taking part.

Don't worry, we're noting down all the details you give out. When we have enough information, we'll post it on Myspace under the heading 'wild party at this address, bring all your friends!!!"

Oddly enough I was thinking about making a topic like this a couple of days ago...
Great minds think alike, eh? :)

In answer to the question: I'm OK with giving out everything up to but not including my bank details. My full name, address, phone number, e-mail address and such things.

I've done it for a while now and thus far I've had no negative consequences.

I'm on first-name terms with more than a few posters in the forum in my sig, and I know the full name of many, including details of their history from what they've told me.
And yet it all works. We trust one another and everything works.

I've given out my full name to one person I exchanged a few emails with, but other than that it's first name (There are more than a few Michaels in North Northants), age, approximate location, stuff that's not really identifying. I've even been loathe to give out my date of birth to all and sundry on a busy site like this...

'Course, Chandelier's "Make a quiz about yourself" thread demonstrated that nobody was paying attention anyway :D

How comfortable do you feel about giving out personal information online, and what are you willing to reveal?

I disclose real-world activities which even strangers (RL acquaintances) might recognize me by. That's not true for all posters, but I guess it shows that I have a one-way sense of anonymity: people who know me in real life can probably recognize me here pretty easily.

I'm not comfortable with people who meet me here being able to find out my name and home address, and I hope anyone who knows me from real life will protect my anonymity against those who don't.

Privacy in real life is a bit of a joke though. There are ways around it (stealing people's mail for starters) ... so I guess I don't take online anonymity very seriously either. It's nice, but I wouldn't rely on it.
