Snakebite: Take Caution!

That's right: This year is going to be a record year for snakebite, some experts say.

"We've treated a lot of snakebites and it is still early in the season," said Dr. Sean Bush, Staff Emergency Physician & Envenomation Specialist, Loma Linda University Medical Center. "Depending on where you are in the U.S., warm weather patterns mean more snakes are out in search of food and water. Also, many of our housing developments coincide with snake habitats, and excursions into snake territory mean more people are at risk for snakebite." Roughly 8,000 venomous snakebites occur in the U.S. each year. About a dozen fatalities are reported annually.

Recent media reports across the U.S. indicate an increase in the frequency of reported snake activity. The Scottsdale, Arizona Fire Department has reported 411 snake removal calls since April 1, up from the 353 calls fielded last spring during the same timeframe. Professional snake wrangler Bo Slyapich in Los Angeles has logged three times the usual number of emergency calls so far this season.

A record year, it seems, is headed our way. So take heed when jogging, walking in the brush even at home, or doing yard work. And report bites early! Be safe, everyone. :)

Still keeping the snakes out of Ireland from the grave, maybe? :p

Unfortunately during snake season though, we don't all live there. :(

Probably. You never can tell. Remember, vigilance is the price of not being infected with a potentially fatal disease or condition by a dangerous animal. :)

Yes. Only, with snakes.

Might sound silly if you've never encountered snakes, but snake season is no joke. :(

You realize when we had that whole "Summer of The Shark" epidemic, shark attacks were actually still on the decline and were lower than they had been in years, which was my whole sarcastic point. A couple high profile attacks lead to a media Feeding Frenzy ;) on shark attacks and thus it was in the news constantly.

If we had that same kinda media stir-up about sharks ten years earlier we would have wiped a few more species out by now.

Scary news stories FTW?

Leave Jawsus out of this :p

Having been around snakes many many many times and never been stupid enough to get bit. It sounds silly period.

Jeez, guys, just stay calm and don't panic, and your chances of not getting bitten are about 99%. The snake doesn't want to bite you; he just wants you to go away. You are not food.

Still, if you get bit: Stay calm. The calmer you are, the safer you are, since stress willl cause your heart to race - thus spreading the venom. Remember that you have plenty of time - no North American snake is swiftly lethal to a human being. Try to get the snake - alive or dead, identifying the snake allows the medics to prescribe the correct antivenine. Cover the bite in a firm pressure bandage - this will slow the spread of the venom. Do not use a tourniquet - while it might stop the poison, it also has a good chance of killing the affected limb. Do not attempt to suck out the poison - it won't work, and might spread the poison faster.

Keep the victim immobile while someone goes for help. If that is impossible, move him slowly - use a stretcher if you can. Arrange for the victim to be taken to a hospital ASAP.

I did. Unless your definition of snakebite is different.

In Greece, a Walrus is a "sea horse." Whereas in the English-speaking world, a seahorse is a little spiny fishlike thing. Maybe that's the confusion?

You're thinking of hippopotamus which translates to "River horse"(ιπποπόταμος). I don't know the Greeks ever encounter walrus.

We do call a seahorse a hippocampus (ie. sea horse) though.

Yup.

The other kind of snakebite isn't something I really have to worry about, what with living in a country with no snakes.

Just because I can...

Redback, Funnel-Web, Blue-ringed octopus
Taipan, Tigersnake and a Box jellyfish
Stonefish and the poison thing that lives in a shell
That spikes you when you pick it up

Come to Australia
You might accidentally get killed

Your life's constantly under threat
Have you been bitten yet?
You've only got three minutes left
Before a massive coronary breakdown

Redback, Funnel-Web, Blue-ringed octopus
Tiapan, Tigersnake and a Box jellyfish
Big shark just waiting for you to go swimming
At Bondi Beach

Come to Australia
You might accidentally get killed
Your blood is bound to be spilled
With fear your pants will be filled
Because you might accidentally get killed

Are you kidding? :D

If so, that's pretty funny. No, the Greeks don't encounter Walrus - in Greece. Doesn't mean they don't have a WORD for it! :p

Anyway, I was right originally: thalassios-ippos = sea horse. That's Walrus in Greek, baby. ;)

Ah, okay. I get it now. :D Lots of currants of different kinds in England, sounds like. An arab sold me a British currant drink the other day. Pretty good, actually - though he himself preferred the "original" formula, rather than the Saudi-bottled version. I didn't know the difference though, naturally. :)
