Maldives government opens official embassy in Second Life
For those of you who don't understand French, what it's saying basically is that the Maldives government hopes this will allow the country to be more active on the international stage, and for more people to learn about it. The embassy was launched with an official ceremony attended by the Maldives' Foreign Affairs Minister and the UN top representative in Geneva.
Macedonia, the Philippines and Sweden will also be opening official embassies in Second Life.

I suddenly see pictures of Second Life Kinkos seeing political refuge from U.S. and German prosecution by running their avatars to the Maldives Embassy.

LOL. That didn't occur to me. :D
Now... I wonder whether those embassy grounds are sovereign Maldives territory, or whether they officially still belong to Linden Lab. :p

Apparently, we've nothing worse to throw away tax money on.

I don't think embassies can be at war, so presumably no. ;)

This (http://secondlife.com/whatis/).
I took an interest in it recently because seven of the twelve political parties / candidates taking part in the presidential election over here had established heaquarters in Second Life. Ségolène Royal even made a short video (http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xzc14_segolene-message-secondlife) to officially launch her virtual HQ. It's been very busy, with a lot of people going there to debate.
The BBC also owns an island in Second Life, and Reuters has a building there.

Not really, at all.
It means that they can reach a whole load of people, all for absolutely no cost whatsoever. Kind of handy for the Embassies of several poor nations. Oh and Sweden also.

Doesn't reach nearly the same amount of people, nor will it get the same level of press coverage.

Indeed. It was a strange but fairly smart idea.

I LOVE Madlibs
I went there (http://slurl.com/secondlife/Diplomacy%20Island/204/95/22/) last night. There was no-one there... but the embassies of the Philippines and of Macedonia are already under construction right next to it. Sweden's embassy will be opening on May 30th, but I don't know where.

So....if they open up an Embassy on second life, does that mean they'll get some of their soldiers to open up accounts on Second Life to protect it?
And with some imagination...
Oooh, the future of warfare, nations will be conquered and occupied solely by their online army representations.

Bah. Chinese script kiddies would own it. With their advanced 5th generation scripts, before you know it, all the mines, forests, fisheries and farms will be owned by them.

Bah, they wouldn't even need scripts. They own most of those in real life, they'd just set up their accounts legitimately and heere we go again.

The Maldives is pretty much screwed, we'll be underwater in 50 years time. Not much of patriot usually, but it's sad to have to live with the knowledge that soon my country will be no more. :(
