TRENTON, N.J. - A 60-year-old woman became a mother, twice over, when she delivered a pair of boys Tuesday.

Frieda Birnbaum gave birth to “Baby A” at 12:44 p.m. and “Baby B” a minute later by Caesarean section at Hackensack University Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Nancy Radwin said. The twins each weighed 4 pounds, 11 ounces, she said.

“The mom is in recovery, and she and the babies are doing really well,” Radwin said, declining a request to speak with the mother.

Hospital officials believe Birnbaum may be the oldest woman to give birth to twins in the United States, Radwin said.

Ok, my question is, at what age is it just to old to have children? I mean this woman is 60, she has maybe 20 good years left in her. Is that fair to the children she's bringing into the world?

In theory, she has a good 60 years left. In theory.

No, bad old lady, bad.
And bad doctor that aided her with the fertilization.

Apparently not, last year another elderly woman gave birth to twins as well (she was 59), and it was in New Jersey!

My paternal grandmother isn't that old and my maternal grandmother is only 10 years older - and I'm 20.

Eh, if you say that old women can't reproduce, it's no different to saying that women with a terminal illness can't reproduce. Or women who eat unhealthily, etc. etc...

Well ok, but I mean in this case, the mother will be 80 when her kids are your age. Idk to me it seems like she's cheating those kids of a normal life.

If she can care for them then by all means.

Of course she is, but no one is going to make it illegal to have kids at really old ages because everyone would throw a fit about denying a mother her natural rights to have children.

Well sure she can care for them. However, doesn't it seem selfish of her to want a child? What about the child's want to have a mother in his/her life before they're allowed to even legally drink!

This woman needs to be required by law to have one of those all-natural overhauls from the second Back to the Future movie. Add 30-40 years to her life, if you will. Only then will she really be able to take care of those kids the right way.

And the explanation for the procedure must be given by Christopher Lloyd. As Doc Brown.

Sorry, that's the only thing I can think of when I picture people that old having kids. It's a far better thought than Strom Thurmond.

But for how long for? I've known plenty of people who've gone completely senile or suffered some other age-related disability before the age of 75. By the time they're 12, they may very well be having to care for her.

Just because someone is old doesn't mean that they need to be taken care of. There are plenty of older folk who are in better condition than some of today's younger one. It's all a matter of taking care of one's self and doing the right thing. Besides, if she's 75, they'd be 14 or 15, not 12.

If she lives to be 75. I mean bah, why make babies at 60!? Why not just play bingo! Bingo won't miss you when you die at 61!!

Its interesting that these questions are asked regularly, when older women have children, but older men having children doesn't seem to elicit the same response - Paul McCartney had a child at 60, Des O'Connor at 72! Is this because the mother is still seen as the carer? are fathers less important? Are older fathers more acceptable because they didn't get help from a doctor?

That's a great point. I guess in the U.S. the mother is seen as the primary care giver. So in cases where an elderly man has a child it's not as taboo as in cases were an elderly woman has one. That is a huge double standard.

However, I would take the same stance. An elderly man should not be fathering children.

A 20 year old mother could be hit by a bus tomorrow. Should we stop people having children because they might die?

Men do this all the time, and nobody cries about it. I find it hard to care.

I know alot of 60 year old people who would object to being called elderly.

My parents are 60, and are active, healthy, and don't seem to be at risk of kicking it anytime soon. (do I want them to go and have a kid, no, but for completely selfish reasons, then I wouldn't be the baby anymore)

I think this is a case of "let people live their own lives." Did I miss where it said she used fertility treatments? Uncommon, but possible she hadn't completed menopause yet, was she a surrogate? The article probably would have mentioned that. Anyway...good for her, I hope that the babies are home soon, and everyone is fine.

Personally, I think the difference is health. Studies have shown that there are significant health risks for older mothers and their children. In fact, a recent study has shown that woman over the age of 36 are more likely to hvae reeclampsia. (narrowing of blood vessel among pregnant women.) Whereas an older man having a child poses few, if any health risks to him.
