stuff to do in Portland, Oregon?
Hi...quick, before this gets moved to spam, I'm flying to Portland tomorrow and I'll be there for 4 days, Thursday through Sunday, and flying back on Monday. What are some cool things to do and places to go for those who live there or have been there?
Thaaaanks!

Visit Powell's city of Books.
Portland Memorial is the coolest masoleum ever.
Visit the rose test gardens.
Go across the bridge to Vancouver and catch a movie at Cinetopia. Go to OMSI. Have a beer with me.
That's all I can think of right now. TG me if you need directions anywhere. What do you enjoy doing?

Oh, before you leave the airport, get a black tiger espresso from coffee people.

Sweet, I'll have a beer with you. <3 Hm, I like to shop, take walks, eat awesome food, go to nightclubs featuring dancing, go to bars featuring lambics and/or karaoke...and I love books so I fully intend to go to Powell's. :) What is the rose test garden? Are they testing out crazy roses?

I'm told there's a good indie music scene there. Other than that, you're in the wrong state. The states to the North and South are both more interesting. :p

I would have to pass on that personally as espresso gives me a bunch of nasty side effects, but I will buy one for a passerby in your honor. :p

Well, I'm staying with people I know, so I don't have a ton of choice.

As far as night life goes, Dante's is my bar of choice. Some nights it's fetish night some nights its Klingon Kareoke. I'll check on what's happening music wise. Storm and the Balls aren't playing unfortunately. Young Immortals might be. Crystal Ballroom usually has something going on. Rocco's Pizza is the best pizza ever. Oh, check the PDX cacophany website. They might have something going on. Oaks Park has some fun rides.

Yeah, well, I might be a little bit of an indie music addict. ;)

Forgot, the test gardens are exactly what they sound like. They create all kinds of nifty roses there.

Kingon Karaoke?!? Wtf...that sounds awesome and also maybe not so awesome, depending on what it actually is. Oooh, rides? I love rides. <3

That is SO cool. I definitely will check it out.

Saturday Market is going on as well.

So I hear! It's on the agenda. Oh, also, how can I get around in Portland? Do they have a cool tram or anything? I won't have access to a car when my hosts are at work.

Catch a movie at one of the theater pubs (like the Laurelhurst on 28th & E. Burnside, the Clinton St Theater, or the Baghdad on Hawthorne St). Check out the Last Thursday Artwalk on Alberta St. Hike around in the West Hills: Washington Park overlooking downtown (take a MAX train from downtown, get off at the Zoo stop) or Forest Park further north.

Cool! What is a theater pub? A movie theater where you can drink beer? A pub with a slide projector in it? What is the ArtWalk about?
P.S. Whoa, you are a heck of a lurker...or somebody's puppet, I suppose.

Last Thursday on Alberta St is a street fair for the counterculture on the east side of the river. A theater pub is a movie theater with good, cheap beer (or sometimes just Pabst), pizza, &c. Portland has a lot of them; they usually play art or cult films or second-runs and are cheaper than regular movie theaters.
There's a lot of options for public transit. It's also a very bike-friendly city.

Neat, too bad I won't have a bike. Maybe I can rent one someplace.

If you can, try and see some of the nature too while you are in Oregon. It is what we are known for (mainly trees :) ).

The Max is the light rail system. It's fantastic. The Bus system is good, but can be daunting.
There is a tram, but it goes from OHSU (medical school/hostpital) to the river only.
And check out Mill's End park. It's the worlds smallest incorportated park. 2ft by 1ft.
Another thing to see in downtown in Portlandia. It is the second largest hammered copper sculpture in America.
And if you have transportation and don't mind a drive. You can check out American Stonhenge.
Also, check to see if there is any tours of the shanghai tunnels going on. Those are all kinds of awsome.
Pittock Mansion is beautiful. It's also supposedly haunted.

A theater pub is exactly what it sounds like. The Baghdad shows feature films and serves a full pub menu. Across the street is the Ben & Jerry's. I've made more than one weekend out of A visit to Powell's Books (one city block, four stories tall -- it is book nirvana), a movie at the Baghdad and dessert at Ben & Jerry's.
And to the jackass who claimed that north and south of Oregon were more interesting? Please continue to believe that. Oregon doesn't need people like you in it. And this is coming from a Seattleite.

Oh, if only they would. The idiots have already worked hard to ruin your city. And they are unfortunately at work on mine.

Worked hard? Shit, their work is done. Housing prices just south of Mars, mall culture across the region, vitually nobody remembers how to f***ing drive, and the solution is always more freeways. The Californication is complete.

Why do they have to ruin everything!
Reno- ruined
Seattle- ruined
Portland- in process
Here in Oregon, we even gave them Bend, dammit! Why can't they stay there. They have the mountain with the best skiing next to them in Bend, that's prime real estate. Why do they have to continue their steam roller of destruction?
I become apoplectic with rage everytime I read the word "NoPo" in the Mercury. It's North Portland you retards! And if you don't like the zoo bombers bicycles, don't open your stupid restaurant next to their bike racks!
Sorry. I'm better now. I really hate losing the city I love so very much. It fills me with deep sadness that Seattle has been ruined.

Ironic as it may be but the first modern malls were in the Seattle area. Bellevue Square was the first modern mall in America (1946). Seattle is not ruined other then the fact the vast majority of people cannot afford a damn house there.
Thank you all for your comments and suggestions. I had a total blast in Portland, except for the fact that I had NO INTERNET. Unbelievable! Anyway, I spent a lot of time around 23rd street and checked out the Saturday Market and generally hung around the city. I took a few pictures (http://www.flickr.com/photos/8545521@N05/sets/72157600282429951/) if you would like to see.

The best parts of Portland are the outdoorsy stuff nearby:
1. Mt Hood. If you like skiing, snowboarding, or just want to see where The Shining was filmed (Timberline Lodge)
2. Multnomah Falls, especially in winter
3. Columbia River Gorge- windsurfing surrounded by mountains- awesome!

Dang, too bad I'm not there anymore. I pretty much saw no nature beyond what was around the city. ;)

I can't believe no one has mentioned Dan & Louis Oyster Bar at 208 SW Ankeny Street. It's about ten blocks east of Powells, a couple blocks south of Burnside. I always try to eat there when I'm in town. All the soups are great, including oyster stew, clam chowder, and crab chowder, and the rest of the menu is incredible.
