Wastes of Time?

Anybody ever wasted all their time and effort on some kind of project, only to have it completely ruined by a malevolent corporation/idiotic person?

I've been posting videos on YouTube since march, and I just had one of my favourite and most popular ones forcibly removed because I had music in the background, and the record company sued for copy right infringement. WTF? It's a f.cking video blog; it's not like I'm making money off of them. I spent hours making that video, and it's all for sh.t because of some goddamn company. What are they going to do next, make it illegal to sing copyrighted songs in the shower?

While I sympathize, the only remotely related situation I deal with, and regularly, is having to can story ideas when I find out about already-published novels that have generally the same plot.

I've gotten as far as about 25 full pages into a project before having to drop it.

Sadly, you have to ask for the rights to use the song, even if you're not making a profit. Chances are, they'll let you do it free of charge... You just have to credit the proper people.

Sad but True. I know alot of sites that are issued C&D's (Cease and Desist) for posting transcripts. Transcripts of shows that the poster makes. they didn't download anything nor did they buy a script and re-write it, but they wrote it out according to what they saw on the shows. and the stations that own the transcripts can sue for copywrite infringement. and this is off of shows they aired, over broadcast T.V. and the person doing it also does not profit.

I did credit them (the artist, at least). It was basically advertisement.

having music playing in the background of a video blog is hardly stealing. copyright litigation is way out of control.

The record companies didn't create the music. They just exploited the artists who did.

1.) All artists are now exploited by the record companies now, are they?
2.) Whether the artists own the music or whether the record company does depends upon the exact nature of the publishing contract that was created between the two.
3.) In these days where the monolithic major labels are collapsing at ever increasing rates, only to have their places taken by independent labels and cartels of smaller companies, the division between company and artist is becoming more and more blurred.
4.) No one forced any artist to sell their songs to a company - yeah, sure there a couple of well documented cases of writers making really bad choices, but they are the exception rather than the rule.

Record companies didn't create the music but they did pay for the rights to the music. Thus they own it.

and if you did post it and someone did steal it for their own use and profit (which doesn't have to be monitary) you would be well within your rights to take legal action.

Paid like five fricking cents. I still don't get how this is "stealing". I'm not claiming the music as my own or making a profit off of it. I just put it in the f.cking background so I could make a blog secretly while my mother was in the other room. Jesus Christ.

Most musicians are not filthy rich and famous. Believe me, I've had friends and family members try to make it in the industry. Most of them are starving unknowns who would probably be excited that somebody actually listened to them.

perhaps, i doubt i'd bother though. besides, publishing someone elses academic paper as your own and profiting from it is not even nearly equivalent to having someone's song playing in the background of a video blog, where it has been credited even.

No, there are plenty of very talented musicians who don't get discovered, and plenty of completely banal ones that do. The music industry is not a simple math equation where talent=success. There are so many more factors affecting it.

so now, next time you know. ask them for a recording to put on your blog and credit THEM for it. ;)

I'm female, and I'm not taking it to court. I'm just frustrated and angry, because I wasted my time on a video that we'll either have to be completely deleted, or completely re-made, which will take hours.

I was of the impression that you could only sue for copyright infringement if they make a profit off of it, however, clearly I am wrong.

But, that should be the law. Using someone else's work without making a profit is fine, but if you make money off of it, thats stealing. This is assuming you paid for it in the first place... not paying for it is stealing anyways.
