Call to power

I was thinking today about the proles or to be more specific the folk who don't care about anything beyond there day to day lives.
now I'd be rather silly to try and isolate myself from other humans (after all I really don't get classical music), but this phenomenon that is the common man a force that is capable of smashing whole empires and disappearing as quickly as it came, the exact indicator of how much we can achieve if we apply ourselves yet still a source of at many a time great shame.
can it last? education around the world has been improving for hundred if not centuries and yet we are still no closer to having a society that cares (if anything it is less see: voter turnouts)
can it be tapped by some exact method like so many have tried with mixed results?
and most of all what makes you post on a political science forum?
well since this is my OP I think I should jam in my answers:
1) yes the population will always be discontent and frustrated with politics essentially democracy seems to kill itself and though you do hear grumbles it never amounts to the talk of what can be done about it (a good thing?)
2) I say a resounding no, the population can choose to worship person/s but there will always be large numbers of dissidents sitting at the wings (proof that peers are more powerful than politics?)
3) I'm on here because, I guess I always seek out new viewpoints and I enjoy the learning of cultures and nations (yes I'm a massive geek:p)
"and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious."
