Though I am now the counter-cultural Pancake you all know and love (though perhaps a little too much sometimes ), I wasn't always this way. Back when I was 11 and 12, I was the typical American brat you all like to stereotype today.

And, of course, I liked teen magazines. They're actually not teen magazines, though. They're actually targeting 11 and 12 year olds who want to be cool just the the high-schoolers. And unfortunately, I was one of their victims.

If you flip open "Teen People", "Teen Vogue" or one of those likewise pieces of crap, you see... celebrities. And "new styles". Oh yeah, you'll see something that actually matters... for 3 pages... if that... But mostly it's "how to be sexy for the guys", "how to look hot for school", and "OMG LOOK AT BRITNEY SHE IS SUCH A WHORE... but we LOVE that hot hairdo and those sexy shoes!"

Despite the atrocious slang in teen magazines (nobody actually uses it is real life... seriously), I've become particularly annoyed by the usages of the word "sexy".

"sexy" is supposed to mean "sexually exciting." So why do all these teen magazines like to say "OMG this hairdo is SEXY!!!" "if you want to look sexy for the guys wear these UBERSEXY shoes!!1" "wearing this scarf will make you look SO SEXY for school..."

Does that mean all the 11 and 12 year olds who read those magazines should "look sexy"? Do the writers know that most of their readers are preteens? Do they really think that guys are going to want to have sex with/masturbate to a girl wearing a particular hairstyle/pair of shoes/scarf? Do hairstyles/shoes/scarves make girls sexy to guys? Do we want 11 and 12 year olds to look sexy?

Madness, I tell you...

Edit: THIS IS NOT MEANT TO BE A BLOG, SO DON'T WHINE THAT IT IS!!! YOU CAN ANSWER THE QUESTIONS YOU KNOW!!!

As a very heterosexual guy, allow me to weigh in on this. I don't care what shoes a girl is wearing. I don't care what scarf she's wearing. I care if she looks sexy and acts sexy. What is this, you may ask? It's being intelligent, not getting caught up in the good-looking arms race, and being able to act like a person, and not a spoiled valley girl/Jewish-American princess.

I'm done now.

I agree completely. I consider the sexualisation of girls at a younger and younger ages a worrying trend, as an indoctrinating influence, and a divisive one which can lead to cliques and alienation of those who can't, or don't want to, keep up with their supposedly more mature peers.:(

Well, of course it's directed at you, seeing how you've made so many blog-like threads. So, no, not exactly a meme.

This one, however, is definitely not a bloggish one, so knock yourself out. :)

Nope. Though blogish, it has some definite legitimate discussion points going on in it, so it's not a blog post. As I said, carry on.

Actually, I haven't made many bloggish threads. Not as many as people like to believe. I can only think of a few that have been bloggish, the others haven't been. Apparently since the creation of those few (which have long since been moved to Chat), everyone likes to jump in and yell "GET A BLOG" even when the thread isn't remotely bloggish. It's starting to make me think nobody's actually reading the threads, just assuming it is a blog and then yellign at me because they read it wrong. It's seriously starting to piss me off.

I think it has to do with the way you phrase your threads to sound bloggish, if unintentionally. The best advice I have is to always ask others' opinions on the subject and/or provide examples of their own instances of whatever is happening to you, so you make it discussion worthy. That way, you avoid the blog comments.

or the ones about the writing contest, because it's really not like you can't post ANYTHING related to your personal life here, that would be silly. Other users and mods are mostly tolerant when it comes to personal problems (like the first one) or special events (like the writing thing).

It's when it gets wholly devoid of so much as even a reasonable question to discuss that people pipe up.

Apart from that, I do agree that it would suck when people were to yell "blog!" whenever you post a thread. Except I'm not really seeing it (apart from Kyronea's "joke" earlier in this thread). And also, you're by now naturally gonna have somewhat less leeway in this regard than someone who usually NEVER makes a bloggish thread.

Well, some things are. Short hair is better then long hair on girls, for example. Red hair is better then blonde hair, white hair is better then red hair (Only if it's on a young person though. No old people. And not gray, actually white.), gray eyes are better then blue eyes, gothy clothes are better then mega-slut clothes, etc.

The problem with those things is the authors have no fucking idea what guys like, or, rarely, have a vague idea of what guys liked 20 years ago.

If it was written by guys of the age the majority of readers are, I guarantee the advice would work better.

Nah. It's the girls that want to act older, and somewhere along the line they got the idea that older girls are concerned with being sexy, so they too should be concerned with being sexy. The magazines realise this and figure "We can make a metric assload of money selling pre-teen girls guides on how to be sexy!".

No. They sell the idea. All "glamour" magazines do that. They don't expect their readers to be glamourous - these magazines don't expect preteens to be sexy, but it sells.

Do the writers know that most of their readers are preteens?
Probably. Probably don't care much though.

Anyway I'm waiting at the check out and I looked at the entrance to the store and noticed a youngish lady and her daughter walk in. I guess the girl must have been 10 to 12, the mother mid thirties.

I have to admit that I was pretty revolted. The pair of them may as well have just walked in with no clothes on.

Stuff like this bugs the crap outta me. Girls should be that, not try to portray a sexual image. I was pretty revolted also when I heard my 11-y/o neice singing My Humps (and not just cos the song is shit:p). Maybe I'm too old-fashioned *shrugs*

The media preys on groups that will provide them with lots of money, in this case young girls wanting to be grown-up, brainwashed into thinking they have to look/act a certain way because the magazines, friends, pop culture tell them to.

Assuming I actually understood the general direction of the OP, I believe it simply takes too anachronistic, literal definition of "sexy". The strict definiton of "sexy" has been dispensed with in favour of one that allows for inclusion in the tranche of adjectives conferring beauty upon something, much like the alteration and colloquialisation of "awesome".

Incidentally, as we're discussing aesthetics, my new haircut is awesome. £38 well spent I feel:)

Yeah. Thank fuck I'm not the only who thinks this! LOL

Personally I think its a dysfunction in the mother...trying to make the child look sexy to an adult male.

Yuck!

I also agree with your second paragraph...I mean what the fuck is a 12 year old doing thinking that a diet is a good thing...

Argh!

Well I'd be a bit worried if you think kids being sexy is a good thing.:)

Kids are v.impressionable, so if they are constantly bombarded with a certain image they should fit or otherwise be labled fat/ugly/misfit etc. then some will try to find a way of attaining said image through diets etc.

I can agree with the "mother" thing, all the kids I know that are trying to be "sexy" have mom's who are irresponsible and weak. I literally know a 3 year old who wears make up and halter tops......it so grosses me out and worries me, I mean where does she go from there?!

That's what I was trying to explain to my 5 year old, once you hit "grown up" there's not much more after that, so that's why she can't wear a bra, or get her ears pierced or dye her hair or wear make-up. She can do 5 year old things, like ride her bike without training wheels, and check the mail by herself, and wear backless shoes, and beaded bracelets.

11 and 12 year old girls are indeed interested in being sexy for boys. When I worked at a summer camp, the girls were just normal little girls until they hit about 11 or 12, then suddenly they'd start showing up for kickball in scooched-up shorts and lipstick. For weeks before the camp sleepover they'd plot how to kiss (or whatever) one of the boys, while the boys were planning on how to practical-joke everyone. I know that a good portion of 11 and 12 year olds are already doing very sexually adult things with each other. So, yeah, that's what the magazines are either reflecting or inducing, or both. How about that.

I'm not comfortable with it. The kissing part seems to be OK, but the being sexy? Not so much.

Attracting boys, however, could be OK... Hope the difference between the two is apparent :)

11/12 is when the horomones start acting up, some of them would be dressing/acting "sexy" anyway, it's just how they go, and this was there before the magazines. Media doesn't start these types of trends they just reflect them and cash in.

Morally, or health wise?

Not morally. Hell, in many religions girls are married off pretty early. I think it is more about physical and emotional health. Girls who learn to use their body sexually so early tend to rely on it for the rest of their lives in place of real intimacy, and they don't care as much who they give it up to, or how many people they give it up to.

How in the hell is it bloggish? Okay... maybe the first part is... I've seen worse that have been left alone though. So why do I get that in every single thread? Even when I had a legitimate medical concern (over unwanted weight loss) people were screaming at me to get a blog.

See, now that you're going on and on about being considered "bloggish", guess what?

That's about the exact same thing my mom said when I was 5.

And I'm really getting sick of all of this marketed at young girls... why do 10 year olds need to dress up and talk like they're 16? They're quite clearly not 16... why do 10 year olds need to be "sexy"? Guys don't even like that anyway...

I've noticed there is no significant difference in many places from how close-to-teenagers (tweenagers?) and much older, college-aged people dress.
