That did seem weird to me.
Both Falwell and Phelps are against Gay Marriage/rights.
Falwell however has said that God loves everyone, Phelps proclaims that God does in fact not love everyone (in phelps case: Homosexuals).

That statement is a major point in Phelps' sermons justifying the WBC's and general homophobia.
