It's that time of undeterminate length of time, possibly week, for another "Popular Bands You Hate..." thread.

NSG Musical Hall of Shame!
Nickelback: Worst Alternative Band
Elvis Presley: Worst Band With Staying Power
The Entire Genre of Nu Metal: Worst Metal Genre
Limp Bizkit: Worst Nu Metal Band.
Sex Pistols: Worst Punk Band (Narrowly beating out the entire genre of punk.)

Once again, we are open to nominations. Keep in mind that these bands must be popular and/or influential.

Shit. I accidentally voted "Power Metal Sucks". Ah well.

There's just nothing I like about power metal. I find it incredibly boring. Anything good about it is done better in other metal genres and everything bad about it makes me want to laugh or just turn it off. I think I prefer nu-metal to power metal, and I hate nu-metal, alot.

Iron Maiden are NWOBHM or arguably speed metal. Some people choose to overlook the beginnings of speed metal and use it as a synonym for thrash metal.

Speed metal evolved two different ways, power metal being the more melodic strain, thrash metal being speed metal + thrash (heavier old school hardcore with two guitars).

I believe you're mistaken, hair metal is lower then nu-metal and power metal combined. Then again I listen to hardcore, grindcore and crust punk and base a band's lameness on it's commercialness, cheesiness and it's cockrockness. The more a band sings about partying and pussy, the more it sucks.

Black metal is the only sort of metal I find interesting, although it's pretty friggin' cheesy.

Crust punk is mostly named for the stank-ass appearance of it's primary fan base. They look 'crusty' and hence are 'crusties'. Grindcore is simply hardcore that grinds, with atonal, chromatic guitar riffs, since the term was coined a genre of super-fast, grinding metal influenced hardcore punk has developed around it. Except 'deathgrind' and 'goregrind' which are simplified death metal and not very interesting to me.

Also his hatred of bands that sing about sex takes out Nirvana.

I quite like Nirvana. While they sing about sex on occasion it's not in the demeaning way that hair metal bands and some rappers do.

You don't like music because of "comercialness?.
That's totally alien to me. I just listen what sounds good to me. 80's pop, Indie and alternative Rock, and whatever Ben Folds is.

Commercialness (patent pending) refers not to commercial success but overt commercial posturing. Slick sounding, boringly arranged and syrupy bubblegum styled music grates on my ears like I imagine a Nasum CD grates on teenie-bopper ears. Indie rock is generally very anti-commercial in it's aesthetics, even if it isn't super harsh and confrontational.

Everyone listens to what 'sounds good to them'. Me personally, while hardcore punk is my main interest I also listen to everything ranging from industrial, gabber, some metal, some indie rock, noise, noise rock and no-wave, grunge, pop-punk (Propagandhi<33), free jazz and alot more... That doesn't mean I don't have a favourite style at the moment, and at this moment it's grindcore.

Iron Maiden ain't no fucking speed metal. Hell, the term wasn't even around when IM kicked ass already.

The term was first used by the band Venom. However it applies (sometimes retroactively) most accurately to the faster, melodic, 'shred' based guitar work seen in bands like Diamond Head, Judas Priest, pre-Haunting The Chapel Slayer, Megadeth, Iron Maiden and Kill 'Em All-era Metallica. Further, I did mention that the term NWOBHM is most commonly associated with Iron Maiden. I'm arguing that NWOBHM was the first wave of speed metal.

This is to reserve 'thrash metal' to include only speed metal based metal bands that borrow significantly from old school hardcore, UK82 and thrash and not the less 'punky' more melodic sounds from a few years before.

You're welcome to be an immature putz and throw around your ignorant upyours smilies. No one cares what dumb people think. Come back when you can make a reasonable argument and not just a fool of yourself.

Compared to what? Trash Metal? Hardly. Grunge? If I wanted want Grunge claims to be, I'd just listen to punk. Classic Rock? If any genre has a claim on the traits that the best Classic Rock had, it's Power Metal. Punk? They don't even belong in the same classification, they are so different.

Unfortunately, I haven't been exposed to too much metal. However, I'm a big fan of most Symphonic Metal, simply because I like power metal (kind of), but I like the orchestra more. Ergo, combining them is made of win.

I usually listen to, when I feel like metal, either Dark Moor or Therion.

Therion was one of the bands who made me fall in love with Power Metal. Between them, Elvenking, and Epica, I had no chance. I honestly cannot understand why Power Metal provokes such animosity in people.

I can understand the response people have to Punk. In that case, it challenges their basic way of thought. But why Power Metal? Is it more of the only latent homophobia(misplaced, no doubt, but when has homophobia been logical)? Is it a fear of being labeled "Geeks"?

Heh heh.

I mostly listen to their later stuff. The monotone stomach-acid gurgling crap in the beginning, when they sounded like Celtic Frost, didn't appeal to me.

Lemuria, Secrets of the Runes, and what-not, appeal to me the most, mostly because I like the occultish stuff. (Yet I'm a Calvinist, go figure. XD)

Not Therion, but Dark Moor's rendition of Dies Irae (Amadeus) is probably one of the coolest things I've ever heard.

I like power metal up to the point where the instrumentals all seem to sound identical and the lyrics a parody of themselves. I voted Dragonforce because they epitomize both these flaws. They play fast, but after a short while it all starts to sound the same... and I'm yet to conclude whether the lyrics are intentionally that corny or if they are completely unaware of it.

However, bands like Sonata Arctica, Blind Guardian, Therion, and especially Kamelot are fantastic! I'm more of the melodic / symphonic metal type, myself. Epica owns my soul.

Well, it's a well known fact that Power Metal is gay. It'll just walk up to Hair Metal and be like "Hey maaaaan, interested?" and then Hair Metal will walk over to Goth Metal and try to pick her up, but he doesn't work because he's to crude and horny, so Grunge goes over and picks her up and they go home and make some unspeakably awesome genre. So then Death Metal and Doom Metal (Who are friends with Goth Metal and don't like seeing losers hitting on her) go over and beat the tar out of Hair Metal, and then Christian Metal comes over and starts talking about how they should be nice, so Death Metal rasps a series of phrases and Christian Metal's hair catches on fire. Then Black Sabbath and Judas Priest walk in and everybody buys them drinks.

Actually, he doesn't set it on fire. He's speech is so much the opposite of Christian Metal it begins destroying Christian Metal. It's a Matter/Antimatter thing. Although you'd think they'd cancel each other equally, Death Metal has more of a force of personality, so he wins the face off.

It's got the same tone, Fiddles. Listen to the way that most critics talk about it. Now, I could certainly say that I could be misattributing the tone. I'm perfectly willing to admit it, if you can come up with a more plausible description, but I hear the same tone in critiscism of Power Metal that I hear in critiscism of Emo, and I've come to associate the tone in the first as coming from a social homophobia. Now, it may be the same tone for different reasons, and that's why I left it in question form, and I would be glad to be shown to be wrong.

And, frankly, I've come to associate Trash metal with obnoxious juveniles. They're the stupid fucks who walk around in Metallica shirts pretending that they know anything about music, let alone Metal. The only thing worse are the muscleheads who like Metallica or other Trash Metal because of how "manly" it sounds.

Warrant is certainly being more...descriptive, but I wouldn't exactly call it sexist Singing about sex in a graphic way isn't sexist in itself.

I mean, the lyrics suck. It's totally lame to rant about how great you are at sex, but it isn't sexist.

Worst power metal band? I'm torn between selecting Dragonforce and Iced Earth. Iced Earth has too much 4/4 and sucks all around, but Dragonforce has ZP Theart and can't play live worth shit. Either way, they both pale in comparison to bands like Freedom Call when it comes to waving your sword around, and Adagio when music is concerned (although the music off of the latter's late album is not of the quality they have exhibited previously).

So, I'm choosing Iced Earth because it doesn't have as many votes as Dragonforce.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I've heard it before. It wasn't clever when Eutrusca said it 2 years ago. It wasn't clever when DK said it 6 months ago, and it isn't clever now. If you've got a problem, answer with substance, rather than with an ad hominem attack. Sinatra is musically dull, uncreative, and repetitive. If you've heard one song performed by him, you've heard them all. The only reason that he was succesfull at all was because he was a handsome man in an era where most of the handsome men were at war. Yawn.

In my experience, if you can sober any Power Metal band up enough, they can play excellent live shows. Dragonforce is just never sober at a live show, and so they suck live. They can't even keep their guitars in tune, and so all of their technically complex, challenging runs come off sounding like shit.

I am a guitarist, playing for about 3 years now, and it was about 2 years ago when I got to know some power-metal bands at a friends house, a very good guitarist who has been playing for about 15 years by now.

Judging on musicality and guitar technique as well as difficulty, dragonforce scores high in the list of options! While Iced Earth, definately not as difficult, scored only 1 nomination up to now! So what are we really judging here?

I think most of you powermetal-haters aren't just open for it. I'm no D&D geek, I'm a guitarist. And my favourite genre is melodic death / black metal. Whereas melodic death would be bands like (the old) in flames and such. Open up your ears not just for metal focusing on heaviness. It's far from my favourite genre, but I can only respect it because the track that plays first on dragonforce's website, I cannot play! I like them quite a bit, and read about them in a guitar magazine once, they called the genre 'nintendo metal' because of the resemblance with the old midi-music old consoles produced, often written by great musicians.
