Democrats Pull Fast One -- Eliminate Votes on Tax & Spend

So maybe the title should read "Democrats Plan Fast One..."

Last November, House Democratic leaders promised the most open, ethical Congress in history:

“[W]e promised the American people that we would have the most honest and most open government and we will.” (Nancy Pelosi press stakeout, December 6, 2006)

“We intend to have a Rules Committee ... that gives opposition voices and alternative proposals the ability to be heard and considered on the floor of the House.” (Steny Hoyer in CongressDaily PM, December 5, 2006)

That may all be changing. The National Review (http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=NjlkMGM2YjJjMDZmMzlhMDA0YzdiM2E3ODMwZjA0NWU=) has posted a release by John Boehner that claims Ms Honest&Open is ready to change the House Rules, allowing tax and spending increases to pass through the House without the accountability of a vote.

This may be what she is worried about...

Republicans have already achieved significant legislative successes on the House floor with 11 consecutive “motion-to-recommit” victories that exposed flaws and substantively improved weaknesses in underlying Democrat bills.

Now Drudge doesn't report this, so maybe (hopefully) it's just idle gossip.

Considering it's a rightwing nut site.

I give that it's 95% idle gossip without any facts.

If Drudge reported it would still be Wingnut bullshit. We'll wait and see. Pelosi is running a far better House than the ones before hers.

But you all miss the key point, its not about taxes, nor spending. Its about not being able to have a vote on either one.

Yep, it's about the tendency of our elected officials to avoid personal accountability. They don't vote on their own pay raises, those are automatic.

I'm not too surprised that this would happen. As soon as Pelosi took over, they eliminated the super-majority, enacted in the Contract days, that was needed to pass tax legislation.

Tax & spend is sadly one of the best insults the Republicans have. It says alot about their think-things-through abilities.

Let's see. Your spin on a right-wing blog's spin on a hysterical press release by the House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH).

Color me unimpressed.

I wonder how much the current crew would have to work to beat the amount the republican controlled Congress had spent?

I find it interesting that Boehner makes said claim without saying which House Rules will actually be changed, and that claims the motions to recommit have strengthened Democratic bills, when all they've really done is delayed legislation by playing procedural games.

Yep, it's about the tendency of our elected officials to avoid personal accountability.

And that is why we need to change our current situation. We need leaders that do not avoid personal accountability.
