MLB Interleague Rivals Weekend
Tomorrow kicks off interleague play as AL teams face off against NL rivals.
This weekend is always great as it is has the Subway Series, Crosstown Showdown, Bay Series, Buckeye Series, etc.
I'm heading to the Urinal at Clark and Addison tomorrow to watch Mark Buehrle no hit the Flubs.

I'm a Seattle sports fan. I find it very difficult to get worked up about what, for us, is another set of games in a far-too-long season of 162.
It's still not that big a deal overall. Interleague play ruined the World Series. The whole point of the World Series (apart from being arrogant about having "world" in it's title with only one non-US team in the league) was to build up the drama of two teams who've never faced one another. Now they all do in the regular season, and that makes an already boring regular season just as dull in the culmination of the playoffs.
I personally love Interleague for the fact that it gives ans of AL teams more than enough statistics to prove to fans of lesser league (NL) teams that the Advanced League is far superior to the Novice League.

Playoffs ruined the World Series. Now the best team in each league has to fight it out in a five game series, just to go on and play another seven games to decide if the previous 162 games were really valid indicators of their worth.
And TV ruined baseball. But that's another rant for another day.

Apparently interleague play is popular with fans though, a big money maker for the MLB. That is what matters after all even if I believe myself that they should cut back on the number of games played between leagues. Better to add in more rivalry games, one can never get tired of Red Sox/Yankees, Cardinals/Cubs, etc.

Please explain to me how a league that thinks that all pitcher should do is pitch is advanced? Nine men go out to field, those nine men should be required to be apart of their offense, not 8 of 9 and the best hitter you have left. Now I will agree that year in and year out the A.L. is the better team, but if you make the pitcher hit, I think that the gap there will be drawn to pretty even.

Back when the pitcher's motion was relatively benign, I'd agree with you. But pitching these days is such a specialized motion that for any pitcher to be a barely decent hitter means sacrificing time spent practicing his pitches and potential for damage to the pitcher from hitting and baserunning. I think it largely boils down to financial concerns.

Agreed. Seems to me that 2 out of 3 should suffice for the first round if we're going to have, what, 4 teams from each league in four-team divisions fighting it out. Remember when winning the pennant meant something?

I'm only annoyed that I can't see my team play more often but luckily thanks to interleague play we can see the Sox play on TBS when they go against the Braves tomorrow.
So perhaps for this reason alone I'll like at least a little interleague play. :)

Short series are even worse than long series. How many 'best record' teams have been knocked out in the division playoffs? I don't know the answer, but if it's more than zero, that's a travesty.
If we're going to insist on any playoffs, lets just get the two teams with the best records, have a best of seven playoff and send the winners to the Series. And let's get the Series wound up by early October.

See, now in 2001, my Mariners had 116 wins and were knocked out in the first round. Don't get me wrong, if they couldn't handle the pressure, that's their own damned fault (that and having a chronically understocked bullpen, but that's another rant), but I can't help but wonder what might have been -- which is a very common feeling for Seattle sports fans.

I just heard one of our local sportscasters propose something that might make sense.
You know Barry Bonds is going to break Hank Aaron's home run record this year. He's taken a lot of steroids to get there and I'm sure he'll be proud of himself. No one else will respect him for it and that is the point of this idea.
Barry Bonds should retire -- finally and officially -- on the day he hits the homer that puts him one short of Aaron. He won't, of course, but just think of the praise that would be heaped upon him, if he would.
I don't think his, Bonds, record will stand for long Alex Rodriguez is going to pass them both. He's closing in on 500 -- should get that easily this year. And he seems healthy enough to hit the next 260, as well.

I am rather suspicious of Guillen's managerial abilities, though. Bringing in MacDougal in that situation was a serious lapse of judgement.

As a Seattelite, I've learned to hate sports on a perenial basis, but I'm keeping an eye on the M's this year, just in case something goes horribly right for once. San Diego will probably win 2 of the 3, but then the M's have 6 easy games lined up, which might give them a shot at passing the Angels.

Can't wait for the Cubs win Saturday and then the inevitable collapse of our bullpen on Sunday in the 8th and 9th innings are we are about to complete the sweep.
Go Cubs!

I can say I've always been a Red Sox fan, not just since they won in '04 unlike so many others. Though if IDF is riding on the White Sox victory it isn't too surprising. Many people need a team to win before it becomes acceptable to be a fan. Real fans stick with their team even when they suck.
And on a very annoying side note, the Braves/Red Sox game was rained out! :headbang:

I'm certainly not riding on the Sox 05 victory. Check some of the threads I started in 2004. I started a few baseball ones for that season and I was clearly supporting my Sox then. I'm a 5th generation Sox fan. Me going through Bevington, Manuel, and the White Flag Trade prove that.

I was at the game by the Flub's pen. I couldn't see who was warming in the Sox pen during the 7th. I saw the 7 so I knew it was either MacDougal, Logan, or Thornton. I really wanted to see Aardsma in that situation, but I would've settled on Thornton.
Ozzie did lose this game. MacDougal isn't a bad pitcher, but he's been struggling and shouldn't have been brought in with the go ahead run at the plate.

Check out that thread. It's from a full year and a half before the magic of October 2005. My prediction for the White Sox was off, but I did call the winner of the AL Pennant.

But hey, so what if you're paying ubermoney to a double retiree to play a partial season.

Given where my loyalty lies I must say I can't shed any tears on the Yankees spending their money this way. Of course after looking at their DL list, they are going to need all the help they can get. Isn't that just sad? :)

My question is what the hell was Cashman thinking when he gave that deal to Roger?
The Rocket sucked his last year in the AL. I remember the White Sox got 8 ER off of him when they faced him in the Bronx back in 2003.
Oh, and Zambozo is getting outdueled by Nick Massett, who is making his first Major League start.
AJ just came in with the bases loaded. Neal Cotts (ex-Sox player who was good in 2005, but sucked balls in 03,04, and 06) came in and 2nd pitch led to a call that went something like this:
"That's waaay back! Get up, stretch! It will! Jones looks up, YOU CAN PUT IT ON THE BOARD YESSS!!!"
Oh, and if this game was on the Southside, Zambozo would've departed to the sound of 40,000 screaming Sox fans singing "Na Na Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye" while Nancy Faust plays the organ.

The whole NL East is pretty darned exciting. Braves take 2 of 3 from the Mets, get back to 1-1/2 games from the lead. This weekend they should get 4/4 from the Phillies...:)

Well, with Myers down for a few days, they called up a AA relief pitcher to close. This kid spent half the year in A Lakewood and half in AA Reading. Oh, this will be good. :D
I think we split em, IMHO. Moyer v. Hudson should be an interesting matchup tonight.

For some reason, I thought we had a four game series. Looks like someone will come out the series winner, though, it's only Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
I do like watching Hudson this year. This is what he was supposed to be doing last year.
Anyway, I'll be in the right field 'bleachers' --- Field Pavilion is what they call it, next to the Braves bullpen on Sunday.
I must say that I am happy with how my team did against the Braves. Tim Hudson seemed to be not so elite in that game which certainly made me happy though the fact I have him on my fantasy team made it a bit irritating as well.
But only a bit. :D
Well Clemens will be making his first start on the 3rd and I already had tickets for that game. I hope Jermaine Dye greets him the same way he did when he last came to Comiskey Park (during the 2005 World Series), by rounding the bases that is. I expect to be choking on firework smoke after every meatball served up.

You should be grateful that the Braves allowed you to reach 500 :)
I sure hope we don't have a June like last year. it was something like 6 and 20, or so.
[edit]
That June sure seems to be on the way. It's hard to find a really bad day to watch baseball, but today was it. The smoke from the fires in South Georgia made it to Atlanta today. Being outdoors at Turner Field made my eyes water and it stunk. So did the Braves.
