do you have one? what do you talk about on it? what do you think of people who have them? what do you think of people who read them?

also.....if you wanna link to your blog, you can, but be forewarned if it's interesting you might end up on my blogroll.

Blags seem to be like diaries, but on the interwebs, and instead of nobody reading it, anonymous people read it.

In any case, I'm too lazy to blag.

And new mod? Why do I keep hearing about a new mod?

Cannot think of a name

I have one that all of two people read, which is probably twice the audience it deserves. I write it with another dude and it's short essays on our industries (film and television production for me and teaching at the college level for him), media and social criticism that we don't necessarily want to try hard enough on to have someone else publish, and inventions we'd like other people to make. Most of our visitors are fooled by our name and only stay for a second before they realize they can't find what they're looking for there. For some reason we place pretty high in the Google search for that item.

And no, I'm not telling you all what it is. I don't need you chattering yayhoos filling up the comments boxes. And considering how you all respond to my threads, you wouldn't be interested.

I forgot to answer the questions I asked........

do you have one?
I have 3.

what do you talk about on it?
on one I talk about all the stuff going on with me.......on another I talk about the kids (it's for family viewing only..keeps the grandparents happy) and on the third I talk about homeschooling issues.

what do you think of people who have them?
it depends on what type of blog it is.

what do you think of people who read them?
weird. ;)

I know that there are a few people who read my blog that I have linked here previously.......I know that there are 39 distinct people who have visited my homeschool blog in the last week, but I don't really advertise it so that's a lot sorta.

There is only one use for blogs. And is if you are disapearing off to the other side of the world then it is a nice way to keep all the people closest to you informed of how you are and what you've been up to.

I wish I'd thought of using a blog when I went to Uzbekistan. Instead I just send huge long emails to those who'd asked to be included.

But surely if you're in some far-flung corner of the world you have better things to do than write HTML?

And I thought blogs were a write-only medium.

i dont understand why anyone would read the blog of a stranger. i can see reading a friend or relatives blog now and then. if its well written. but i dont see why anyone searches out the ramblings of strangers.

i dont really have an opinion of people who have blogs. it seems OK to have one (or 3) as long as you dont get pissed that masses of strangers dont follow your every word. in any case its a form of communication, it cant be inherently good or bad, it has to depend on what you put in your blog.

I keep an eye on complete stranger Dave Rat's blog - he's currently mixing FOH for the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and started out stooging for Black Flag. Why? To see how the other half lives and pick up a few hints here and there for application in my bottom-feeder world of live sound.

I read blogs quite often. Some of my favorites are Digby, Pharyngula, Pandagon, Girls Read Comics (And They're Pissed), the Invincible Super Blog, and Orcinus (David Neiwert).

I rarely post on my blog these days, though I used to do so more frequently.

i think unless a blog has some specific point like humour or looking for awesomethings and then testing them then they are pretty worthless. political blogs annoy me, they're just like NSG but without any debate. personal blogs are a waste of intertube, i really don't understand why anyone would be interested in the daily lives of random individuals. they're like reality TV only you don't have TV people picking out the most 'interesting' characters and playing them off one another, it's just one random person blethering on about themselves. 'nuff of that.

I really don't care for blogs. Very amateurish and oftentimes over-hostile.

But, I do have a livejournal...it's nontraditional as far as livejournals go, though, as my average post is something akin to "I did stuff today...snorkel!!!!!snorkel!!!!!!" Never put in specifics or emotions...just a totally random creation I'm not willing to let die. I fully realize no one reads it, but I like to have my perspectives of the past, since I've had it since 2004.

I am all for blogs.
I started mine when I moved to a new city, as a way to keep my family and friends updated with my life. That was well over a year ago. Nowadays nobody appears to read it, but I do not mind. I like having the record for myself, and intend on forcing my grandchildren to read it so they learn what my life was like when I was their age.

In its life, my journal has had one reasonably useful day. Someone applying to my university read it so she could have a taste of what the school was like. I am glad she found it useful. The blog also created a rift between a friend and I, but that was coming anyway, and we are pals again now anyway.

P.S.: I know none of you probably care, but there is a link to it down in my signature. My Youtube stuff is more exciting, though (My sister has recently hijacked it and added some of her own creations, but everything past the first four clips is mine).

I have one, but last time I linked to it here, I got comments from a guy who couldn't leave our disagreements here and decided it would be cool to make stalkerish remarks about my girlfriend, so I keep the two lives separate now. (Last I heard, that asshole was DOS from this place too.)

Overall, I like them--I get access to a wider variety of news stories than I would normally find on my own.

there was someone for a while who would post comments on mine along the lines of "death to all republicans" and "kill the christians" but I moderate comments so I just deleted them, after a week or so I think they figured out that it wasn't going to do much good.....so they quit.

I moderated mine too, and IP banned the fucker a couple of times as well, but it wasn't worth the aggravation to keep the link between the two places. That's part of the reason I left last time.

that seems rather harsh

and rather unexpected from someone who thinks to post his opinions on an internet forum.

whats the difference between NSG and a blog?

On NSG people will disagree with you and you can't do shit about. With a blog you can blog out those assholes.

"an assembly, meeting place, television program, etc., for the discussion of questions of public interest."

The unsavory members of this forum like to use it like a blog, to post lengthy garbage and boring stories about their personal lives, as well as innumerable, pathetic variations of "look at me!"

huh? did that answer my question?

do you REALLY think there is a big qualitative difference between posting your opinion here and posting it on a blog?

i dont.

so WHY are you so contemptuous of blog and the people who have them?

very true.

but with people who post things like "i have nothing but comtempt for them" its not a great recommendation for NSG.

i mean, i know that there is an obvious difference between the 2, im not stupid, but i cant see where one deserves nothing but contempt and the other is so great that NG decided to participate.

real websites are much more creative and interesting and have more and better potential to be, though of course they take more knowledge and skill to create and maintain.

i have nothing against the idea of bloggs, and there's a lot of good stuff on some of them. certainly more accurate and useful insight as to things that go one where the blogger lives and is in the middle of then you'll ever get from any sort of media journalism.

and of course a lot of musicians these days do blogs instead of websites. but those who do both, i like the websites better.

noncomercial 'vanity' websites have always been what i think of and prefer to think of the internet as being FOR. that and forums and gallery/archives of, by and for, creative and immaginative people.

and interest groups, like railfans and furrys and so on.
