New Monitor - Yaay!

Anti-Social Darwinism

My old, bulky 17" monitor finally died, it was 6 years old and had a long, productive life.

My new monitor is a 19" flatscreen and I am quite pleased with it.

I do have a question, though. It seems that things are loading faster now. Can a new, improved monitor cause this, or am I imagining things and my computer is just having a good day?

I think your old 17" was just slower :p

I'm at work, I have a laptop using 1440x900, 19" LCD at 1440x900 and 17" CRT at 1280x1024 for my desktop.

Placebo effect.

What resolutions does it support. Mine only goes up to 1280x1024.:(

I'm using two - yes they are Widescreen. It's a weird 16:10 ratio not 16:9 ....

Mine up to 1600x1024 but I usually use 1024x768 (flatscreen CRT).

My first monitor died after about 5 year after fizzing and emitting smoke.

At least you weren't left wondering whether it could be repaired.

Funny story: My second monitor (the one I have right now) had a fault (common to a particular batch of them) where the colour emitters weren't soldered in properly.

What happened was that after about 10 minutes of usage I would lose the blue colour, then after about 30 minutes I lost red and was left with green. It was kind of cool for a while, made everything feel retro.

However all of them failed and I was left with a really dark, fuzzy screen. Took only 5 minutes to undo the case and correct the problem but it was odd for the week I had it.

I'd mount them sideways and set the driver to rotate pi/2 and select an above configuration for the screens. That would give you 1800x1440, which is 5:4.

I've been on/off coveting the BenQ one for a while, and the Dell one has had its critical flaws fixed at last (and is much cheaper). But they're not going to be getting more expensive, with TN-Film screens that big appearing...

HP Lp2465

We have a deal with compaq/HP on campus so this is actually our new lab standard monitor (all are at 20 widescreens now) but end of summer all public labs should have 24 inch wide screens with the new computers
(about 1400 lab computers in just the open labs)

Pretty good. Very good for a standard lab screen. Shame it's only DVI, the same problem as my current 20" TFT (but not, of course, a problem for labs or offices; I have no telly, so if I want a games console it matters), and it's a bit more expensive than a couple of screens that have composite and similar.

It's a small disadvantage, but if you're going to spend about £500 on a monitor you want it to be ruddy perfect!

Dual DVI and comes with DVI -> VGA cables standard

All lab machines have DVI out though so it is fine and the dual DVI is nice because input switching is like a TV I have my desktop hooked to DVI and I have a DVI > VGA cable on my desk for my laptop and just hit the "input" button and swap over to my laptop

Edit: Also we are geting a deal with bulk orders we are paying like 350 USD a monitor

The school I am hopefully transferring to, has a good CS program. Most of its labs have Sun workstations.

IIRC, what he has at home is bigger, or at least higher resolution.

But I'm still jealous. I'm like mjealous, I'm so jealous. I have a single 19" @1280x1024, after a few months of 2 19" @ 1280x1024. I so want to have that second monitor again.

Don't need to. He bought a second hand graphics card and it bummed out on him. Now he's got to invest in a whole slew of hardware upgrades before he'll consider a new monitor.

And I'm well ahead of him in the hardware department. Nvidia GEforce 8800 GTX :p

I'm on an dual core Opteron. CAD$300 and it easily overclocks to 2.6GHz (which is what the $1200 FX60 runs at). I will save up next summer to buy a discrete Intel card, which will start shipping Q3/4 2008.

My current desktop uses a rather rare Opteron 165 (Socket 939) @ 1.8 Ghz but it's performance compared to my laptop's Intel 5600 Merom is rather pitiful. I'm waiting next year to see which quad-CPU is the go, the "where the hell is it" AMD or the current release Intels.

Same chip here. Got mine dialed down to 1.4GHz now because the weatherman forecast 30 degree weather, and with the tiny, poor ventilated room I have my PC in, that can easily get it up to 56 degrees at idle.

Anyways, you should wait to see if AMD's K10s are on par with the Conroe. AM2 was basically an attempt to kill some of Conroe's thunder while AMD developed the K10. AMD's demonstration have shown a savage enough lead over Conroe for us to be pretty sure this will be the case.

Pretty much everything nowadays is miles ahead of it. Still functions well as a workhorse. Only problem with the whole setup is that every year or so I have to clean the heatsink.

The most common thing I break is the power supply.

Don't buy a cheap supply (for example, 500w power supplies for $39.99 aren't the kind that you should be looking for). Buy a decent brand, like PC Power and cooling, Antec, Fortron, or OCZ*.
