My wife taking a little cat nap on sun warmed tatami on a sunny spring day after the rains have passed; making everything sparkle as the remaining low clouds boil off the evergreen foothills that surround my town and hug the pure white peaks of the Japanese Alps.
That, to me, is beauty.

The most beautiful thing... is cottonwood falling as the sun sets. Every piece catches gold, and against a silhouette of trees and blue sky, it takes my breath away. Or perhaps, it's streams of lazy afternoon sunlight through the bedroom curtain, pooling on the bed, a tangle of my lover's limbs and my own, flecks of gold in his hair and a tell-tale flush still present in his cheeks. With that content glaze across his eyes, the one that suggests he probably couldn't tell me his date of birth if I asked him too suddenly.
Or perhaps, it's snow falling along the back streets of my town, or a meteor shower viewed on one's back, in the middle of the grass baseball field. I guess it's too hard to pick one, and it's entirely dependant on my mood at the time.
Edit: Of course at least one boy would say a car. I've tried so hard to understand the appeal, really, I have, but they... move. Quicker than humans do. And they shine, if they're clean. :p There ends my admiration.

While I appreciate older cars, I just have never liked the appearance of them, and the only Bentley that is a VW underneath is the Continental GT/GTC/Flying Spur. The Arnage is still all original.
If you guys are gonna go for cars, at least use a very beautiful one, like thus:

The most beautiful thing is relative, temporary and a continual now.
At Coors Stadium it's the green field and blue sky dotted with white clouds coupled with a gentle breeze.
In my "yard" it's the oak trees getting leaves and some small blue flowers blooming between the trees.
Out my back window, it's Pike's Peak at sunrise, covered with snow.
Driving down Academy Blvd., it's the street maintenace crew working swiftly to fill in potholes created by recent snowstorms (believe me, if you've ever lived in Southern California, you'd know how beautiful it is to see road maintenance crews actually working).
In the winter, it's new snow in the sunlight with no footprints in it yet.
It's a long list, constantly being updated.
I find certain numbers to be beautiful, like 7 or 13,452 or 66,445,654. I know that seems strange, but my mind works somewhat differently to most people's and I really like numbers.

The Berkshire mountains in the fall, closely followed by the Berkshire mountains in the spring, winter, and summer. Especially near dawn or dusk on a day with just a bit of moisture in the air - the misty swirl of colors over those old, old hills took my breath away several times a day back when I lived in Massachusetts. I think I will probably miss the Berkshires for the rest of my life.
Of course, much as I love those mountains, that sight is less transcendently beautiful to me than the experience as a musician in an ensemble of everyone simultaneously getting something just perfectly, utterly right, so that some little voice down at the core of your being cries out, "YES. THIS. THIS IS IT." It happens only rarely, but when it does, it is the most amazing thing in the world.
The pennines are here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennines)

Look man, it's not that important that it needs to hijack this thread. I took you for something you weren't, so we're talking about different things. This all started because I misread what you wrote. After noticing my lapse, I re-read it and I then got your point. Then you decide I don't know shit about cars because I don't wish to discuss it further. I don't appreciate it when my knowledge and appreciation of something I've loved for years is challenged by another person of the same. Especially over something as trivial as misreading something this late at night. I can barely keep my eyes open to be honest, and was just about to hit the hay before this.
But as this is a hijack, I will drop it as this isn't worth arguing over. G'night.

It's a little hard to answer the OP's question.
I have no 'lifelong' standard of beauty, but if you added up all the times I've been rapturous about beautiful things, it would be like 40% beautiful ideas I read or heard, 30% beautiful women or girls, 10% beautiful tastes, sights etc., then random stuff.

It's an obsession. I do remember my life before I went like this, but I've always liked numbers. They don't question you, they don't judge you, they don't shout. They don't expect anything from you except to be counted. And even if you don't, they don't gt mad about it, they just sit there patiently until you do.

23 March 1889 mean anything to you?
According to Wikipedia you have three choices:
# 1889 - Land run: President Benjamin Harrison opens Oklahoma to white settlement starting on April 22.
# 1889 - The free Woolwich Ferry officially opens in east London.
# 1889 - The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community was established by Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad in Qadian India.
None of them mean much to me.

Have you read Avoid? (I haven't, just made me think of it)
No. I've never heard of it. What's it about?
It's "A void"- a novel in which there is no letter "e". It's a translation of the French "La Disparition" by Georges Perec, which also does not contain the letter "e". I read it when I was 16-17 because the concept intrigued me... I found it slightly long-winded.
I once soiled myself at the mere sight of Euler's Number (I won't type it out here, just to be safe).
Personally, I love Euler's Identity. The simplicity to me embodies beauty.

I don't like Pi. It makes me feel a little insecure. I like nice, whole numbers. What's Euler's number? I'm not a mathematician, I just have an obsession with counting things.
What about Phi, the so-called "golden ratio" (1:1.618 iirc)?
Well, I`d say no, but yes is also aprovable. So is maybe.
nature's diversity. it's refusal to kiss the ass of our idiosity of trying to screw everything up by trying to make everything any one way, like our trying to make everything have to begin and end with little green pieces of paper, or any other kind of mundanizing. the way everthing in it exists by coexisting, even those which prey on each other. the way it refuses to be the simplistic cleche so many humans seem to get off on trying to immagine it to be.

What's with those numbers in the quote tags? This one is [QUOTE-Cannot think of a name;12659061] What does 12659061 stand for?
I don't know what it's about, I just know that the entire book doesn't contain the letter 'e'.
The best part is it's French, and the English translation doesn't have an 'e' in it either. That had to be one pain in the ass translation.
The numbers are references to our post, so that little arrow in the quote will link you back to the original post.

From what I hear, squab is quite unpleasant. I suppose it's an acquired taste.
But hawks, and most birds, have a very poor sense of taste, bordering on none at all. So that's rather irrelevant.

My home town has red-tailed hawks as a native animal, and a small zoo with an open air cage that had...a red-tailed hawk. Which I always thought was fucked up. If I wanted to see a red-tailed hawk, most often I could just look up. And so could that poor hawk in the cage...I wonder if the other hawks visited him at night. "Dude, that's fucked up, what they get ya for?"

There's a distinct possibility that the caged hawk is either wounded or imprinted (so attached to a human or a human environment that it would do poorly in the wild); barring that, it may be a falconer's bird. If you're concerned, ask the zoo, I'm sure they'll be happy to provide you with information.
On the ethical side of it, you have to think like a hawk. Sure, you're a little confined.. but you're fed every day without hunting. You're protected. You have all your needs looked after. Falconers train their birds with food so that they return to them rather than flying away; it would seem, at least, that raptors are motivated by their base needs rather than an abstract concept of freedom, which is in line with most animals. So there's not really a need to pity him.. though I understand the inherent sadness first felt when seeing a wild, predatory bird caged, rest assured that the hawk is probably quite content.

Well, first it was a joke more than anything, and second it's guaranteed that he was injured as the zoo was actually set up to take care of sick and injured animals (it was the zoo that took care of the actual Smokey the Bear, though that's disputed (but we're totally right)). It also had a three legged fox, a lion with digestive problems, and a weird bobcat that escaped once and attacked a friend of mine when he tried to get in his car (the bobcat was hiding underneath it-if you knew the guy you'd realize how funny it is (he didn't get hurt that bad, I'm not a monster) he was the quietest most unassuming dude...you really had to know him to realize how funny it was).

I figured it was a joke, but just in case, I didn't want you to feel bad for the bird when you didn't have to.

The "mountains" in this area are small and rocky. They only reach just above the treetops and a few meters more. Even though most sides are rocky and pretty much vertical I've never found a single mountain that didn't have at least one gently sloping path up to the top that can be walked comfortably rather then climbed. And the tops are always a small area of flat ground where a group of trees are growing as if a tiny portion of the forest had been lifted up above the rest to get a good view.
