It seemed like a good idea at the time.

This dude needed some spare cash, and brass was selling for $1.70 per pound. So this genius decides he's going to sell the brass cartridges from a bunch of .223 ammo. Only problem was the cartridges were still live. Well, easy way to solve that. Just stick 'em in a vice, line a screw driver up with the primer, and wack it with a hammer. Unfortunately the 100th round lodged in his abdomen. http://apnews.myway.com/article/20070514/D8P4CJOO0.html
First of all, I'm shocked he got through 99 rounds safely. Second, this is stupid on so many different levels. First of all, one would think he could sell the ammo for more money than scrap brass would fetch. Secondly, he's got .223 ammo, but he can't just empty the brass by doing some target shooting or something? Third, hitting live ammo with a hammer doesn't seem like the brightest idea. I look foreward to this guy ending up in the Darwin awards someday.
He probably would have been better off just selling the bullets.
Or putting them in a gun and robbing some money.

well you know what they say, "You should hammer your brass while the ammo is hot."
Hats off to this man! He will make a fine candidate for a darwin someday.

- maybe he was more careful in the beginning? after 99 rounds he probably wasn't as aware of the dangers as before, and he was probably getting tired
- maybe he didn't have somebody who wanted to buy the ammo, there was someone who was willing to pay $1.70 for a pound of scrap brass
- maybe he didn't have a gun? or his parents told him he couldn't use his gun or something
- yeah, it was really really stupid

All I can say is that at least stupidity has some amusement value.

My God...the scary part is, this could be anyone's neighbor.
It stands to reason he has been doing smart things for a while.
A .223 in the gut is a damn tough way to learn a lesson. At leats its HIS gut though and not a kid accross the street playing.

When has anyone ever said that? Ever? :p

They used something like that on Mythbusters before.

I think they wanted the powder. I remember it, too. I use a puller that fits in my reloading press. I went through about 500 rounds of .223 this winter so I could replace the worthless 50-something grain bullet with some heavier ones.
