Mr.Umberto Pirilli, an italian member of the European Parliament, elected in the lists of the right-wing party Alleanza Nazionale (a scion of the former neofascist party "Movimento Sociale Italiano"), said this:

La legge è femmina e può essere violentata, il diritto no perchè è maschio.

Literally:
Law is a female and can be raped, right cannot because it is a male
(note: in italian, "legge" (law) is a feminine noun, "diritto" (right) is masculine).

This wonderful sample of... fascism? sexual discrimination? idiocy? ignorance? contempt for civilisation? choose one or more... was pronounced in an official session of the Parliament.

Wow. The Right Dishonourable Pirilli just managed to make me feel ashamed of being an italian.

Clearly Italy needs to change the genders of important things to masculine, lest they be raped.

Oh wait, men get raped too.

I guess the MEP in question is just a moron.

What a jackass. Not that I like our president much, but even though he says stupid shit all the time, this is not something that he would say. You know its bad when you make Bush look good

Italy seems to have a lot of these dead-ideology holdovers, communists and fascists and whatnot.

So what was the context that he used it?

Not that I'm advocating such a thing, but I bet he'd regret that quote if he got raped. :p

The not small difference is that in Italy, communists have always upheld democracy - in fact, if it weren't for the communist partisans in WW2, Italy would still be under the Savoia kings. It was the communists, together with the socialists and some of the christian democrats, who gave Italy the right of divorce, the right of abortion, the Workers' Statute, collective bargaining etc. This is why the two main communist parties in Italy got about 8% of the polls at the last elections (and are steadily on the rise).

Fascists, on the other side, have always upheld three things: fascism itself, violence and ignorance.

Yes, I hate fascists.

After all those years of studying French, I could never understand why some words were masculine and some were feminine. Language (as far as I'm concerned) doesn't need to have masculine and feminine words - languages that still incorporate this idea (including the agreement of other parts of speech with this "word gender") are asinine.

14 february 2007. Session of the European parliament, discussing the Claudio Fava dossier about the "extraordinary renditions".

Mr.Pirilli was rebuked by Giorgio Napolitano himself (President of the Italian Republic).

The feminine and masculine exist for lyrical and poetical reasons. Language doesn't need it, but it still makes litterature that much more interesting.

It's just a part of speaking an indoeuropean language, and not the oversimplified version of some of them.;)
Anyway, we could introduce the "asinine" gender ;)

German's got three genders, masculine, feminine and neuter. Amusingly the word for little girl is neuter
