Newt's inching closer to a presidential run! Just thought I'd post a quick poll to see who's hip to the Newt. Better get on that bandwagon now, or it'll leave you in the dust! :)

An item of Newt trivia, if I may:

So far, I like Ron Paul the most.

He has never voted to raise taxes.
He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.
He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership.
He has never voted to raise congressional pay.
He has never taken a government-paid junket.
He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.

He voted against the Patriot Act.
He voted against regulating the Internet.
He voted against the Iraq war.

He does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program.

He returns a portion of his annual congressional office budget to the U.S. treasury every year.

Yeah, speaking of fevers, does one show up from contraction of The Clap?
You know, the one he might've picked up during his philandering and bafflingly hypocritical period of influence with his Contract On America?
The one where he was ... you know ... persecuting Slick Willy over something that was no one's business? While he was doing the exact SAME no-one-else's-business?
That one?

OR the one with the bipartisan medical legislation effort with SAME SAID Clinton's wife (and future president prospect)?

Ah, before I forget: It's good to remember that Newt is quite concerned about climate change, also known as 'global warming.' Newt is currently in the process of writing a book on that topic, tentatively titled "A Contract with the Earth." Interesting stuff! I know that many here are also concerned with the global climate, and may be heartened to know that there is now a conscientious candidate in the race!

In fact, this link may be useful for that reason (among others):

*Sigh* I hoped this wouldn't get ugly, but that wasn't to be, apparently. Yet, the article itself says quite clearly:

Gingrich said that didn't make him a hypocrite, because Clinton was impeached not for the affair, but for lying about it.

Perjury is quite another species of offense. More than a simple legal distinction, if you ask me! ;)

However, if you'd read a bit more carefully, you'd see that the excerpt you quoted from me uses the phrase "thirty years ago." Clearly, I was referring to an entirely different set of accusations, which were false, as opposed to the instance at issue here.

Another possibly invented issue of thirty years ago, which Newt himself knows is gutter politics, surely, by his rightly ignoring it.

It's good to remember, for the newcomers to politics here, that Newt presided over the first GOP-lead House. Quite a feat! But again, one that made him a magnet for slander and undue criticism.
It's quite clear from that exchange that 1) I wasn't referring to something from 30 years ago, as I noted it took place during the Clinton impeachment and 2) that you weren't paying attention when you replied to it, or you would have noticed that I set it in time. Further, it showed that you didn't know what the hell you were talking about, because Newt didn't preside over the first GOP led House. He presided over the first one in many years--over 40--but Republicans had controlled the House in previous eras.

Finally, I don't know what you hoped to prove with that Gingrich quote. Gingrich saying he's not a hypocrite doesn't automatically absolve him of hypocrisy--it just shows an ability for, at the very least, self-delusion, and a penchant for thinking his potential supporters are as dumb as a bag of hammers (no offense to hammer bags intended).

Yes, of course Newt didn't preside over the first GOP-led house! :D That's an honest mistake, likely the result of acute Newt Fever. It's quite the affliction. ;)

As for the time frame of various accusations (there have been many, and unfair), note that I was skipping around quite a bit, from the seventies, where someone had accused Newt of infidelity during his first marriage, to later events, which unfortunately resembled events of that earlier time! It's unfortunate, but your remark about "sucking," etc. was similar to another accusation made thirty years ago, hence the confusion! So we were off the track from the word "go," sadly. Still, it's good to look to the future and reject the "gotcha" last-minute politics of the past. It's the future of the Country at stake, after all! :)

“Newt fever” among the staff began when—during springtime—
the first newts could be seen in the shallow ponds in the countryside
surrounding Cologne. Then, a small “expedition” of professors and
Ph.D. students with special fishing nets and buckets was assembled.
It was the ambition of every participant to catch as many newts as
possible. Various newt species preferred favorite ponds. T. vulgaris
and T. cristatus like sunny ponds, while T. alpestris prefers ponds that
are partly shaded and close to or within the forest (Figs. 1 and 2). The
different German species are shown in detail on my home page
(www.uni-essen.de/zoophysiologie) and on my videotape.www.ijdb.ehu.es/web/contents.php?vol=47&issue=2-3&doi=12705670 -
