This is fucking rediculous!

I got my first paycheck for the tax period today for the amount of 37.50 (its one day worth of pay because I was off the schedule through most of April). The amount of taxes taken out... 37.50!!!!!! So now I don't have a single dime to even make an attempt to put toward one of my bills... or $7 for a movie ticket... not even .30 cents for a pack of gum. I didn't even think it was legal for a whole paycheck to be taken regardless of the fact its only for $37, what the hell am I supposed to do for the next 2 weeks?

Well it's odd to have your taxes take up your entire check. I'd ask about that one.

Depends, have you discovered the local office that hands out free gum and movie tickets for all tax paying citizens? If not, I blame your lack of funding on human error or capitalism.

you need to adjust your W-4, you must have them taking out more than what they should.....meaning you probably claimed "zero" and then added that they should take more....

SS and medicare should only be 6.2% and a check for 37.50 after that shouldn't have any federal income tax taken out unless you told them to.

although, I have seen this happen with fast food employees who charged too much food onto their check......sometimes they end up owing at payday.

Except April, apparently.

As for 'what are you going to do'...? Well - you don't actually live on this as your sole source of income, I assume (because, let's be serious - if you were honestly expecting to live on $37 dollars...)

Perhaps it's not 'tax' that's being deducted. Does your statement specifically list all of the deductions? Perhaps there are uniform deductions, union dues, etc.

I work as a radio DJ. And its not that I planned on surviving on $37 its that I was planning on buying lunch for my mother on mother's day (today) and using the remainder to pay my college loan bill for this month (the 15 or so left would have given me what I needed) Now I risk defaulting on my loan. Rent and food I have taken care of for the next 2 weeks but now I'll have to hope no emergencies come up for the next few weeks.

Mostly it just pisses me off that this can happen; I found out what it was - the city took out the $33 left after taxes as oart of thier damned $50 work privalage tax that they snuck in last year tacked on to another bill to fix the sewage lines under main street.

2. Occupation Tax

The occupation tax has roots in England during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. At that time, many occupations were created by grant or title and could be sold or transferred between individuals. Occupations thus often were a form of property which could be bought and sold, much like real estate.

It is not surprising then that the occupation tax is very similar to the real property tax. The tax is levied on the value of residents' occupations, as determined by the county tax assessors office. The occupation of school bus driver may have an assessed value of $25, for example, while that of a lawyer may be $290. Assessed values are not based upon income, so all members of the same occupation will pay the same amount of occupation tax even if their income differs dramatically.

The local jurisdiction levies a tax rate on these occupational assessments. The occupation tax is collected from residents, without regard to where they actually practice their occupation.

The occupation tax can also be levied as a flat rate tax. Every person who works pays the same amount, regardless of their occupation. The maximum levy as a flat rate is $10 per person, while there is no limit if the occupation tax is levied as a tax rate.

http://cax.aers.psu.edu/taxreform/localtax.htm#occupation%20tax

you people are insane. *refuses to even visit PA now*

I thought it was bad enough when I lived in a place with local income tax and private property tax, but this just sucks.

I think he meant thirty cents, as opposed to three-tenths of a cent.

This sounds a bit like extortion. Where do you live? Some unknown communist town? That's why people don't like super-communism. They prefer a system where you are rewarded for not being lazy. Screw hyper-nationalism and 100% tax rates.

Unless you wait tables, in which case it's often the norm. Of course, a single day of waiting tables wouldn't get you anywhere near $37 in actual wages.

The 'occupational privelage tax' in Meadville (the town where I work but not exactly live) is a one time a year $50 tax. It has been overturned by the state courts and is now down to $15 beggining next year.

Yes I can survive for 2 weeks on $37.50. I often survived 2 weeks on $20 in college.

And to answer the other questions, I payed my rent for this month last month, I pay $98 a month for rent in my trailor court (gotta live somewhere).

My normal income and cost breakdown ratio generally evens out with a few bucks left over. I'm a cheapskate.

A barely veiled way of saying 'extortion'.

You know, I have no beef with taxes in general, and relatively high taxes, but this one just seems ridiculous. An occupation tax? That's just idiotic.

And also, this is the reason why I despise flat taxes. If it were a percentage, you'd still have some money, but if you have a flat tax, people will inevitably get screwed over. Such as you.

That's neither here nor there though...

This tax is just plain screwy.
