Popular Bands You Hate: Worst Punk Band

Zarakon

So, what's the worst popular punk band?

I leave the field open for nominations. We need 8-10. If we don't get that many by page three or two days, I'll just start the poll with the present nominations.

NSG Musical Hall of Shame!
Nickelback: Worst Alternative Band
Elvis Presley: Worst Band With Staying Power
The Entire Genre of Nu Metal: Worst Metal Genre
Limp Bizkit: Worst Nu Metal Band.

The word "punk" has been so abused and misused over the decades that almost anything could be argued to fit, provided that they can't play worth a damn.

Good Charlotte has left any and all of its true musical origins.

They are nothing but pretenders anymore.

You do make a good point. It's probably not enough to be considered actual punk music.

To be honest, the only band still around that I consider to be punk anymore is probably Greenday, and I sort of like them because I saw them a couple of years ago, and they were pretty good. I haven't listened to them in ages, but I don't dislike them enough to nominate them.

American Idiot is a terrible album. Worst one I ever bought.

Some of their older stuff is good IMO. Like International Superhits.

Okay...this is harder then I thought.

How do these nominees look?

Sex Pistols
Dead Kennedys
The Clash
Circle Jerks
Bad Religion
Social Distortion
Black Flag
Rage Against the Machine
The Ramones
Banhammer (Joke option)

I tried to pick ones that are popular on NSG, rather then on the rest of the world (Whose taste in music, arguably, sucks.)

YEah, their older stuff isn't bad, but American Idiot is horribly overrated, hence the fangirls comment. All bands have fangirls, but Greenday? Waaayyyy too many clueless fangirls. They just think the band memebers are hot.

Do you just get an orgasm everytime you make Rage Against the Machine a poll option? Because making them Nu Metal was specious, but punk? That's just odd.

Never been to a Rancid gig, have you? At least a quarter of the sodding crowd were fangirls. Mind you, Tim Armstrong is oddly attractive. Billie Joe Armstrong was nearly in Rancid. Armstrong asked him if he wanted to join in 1993 (around then, anyway), but he stuck with Green Day.

Because The Stooges or New York Dolls never existed, right?

Don't forget about The Who, or even the Sex Pistols, who started completely parallel to the Ramones, oddly enough.

That's what I find so fascinating about the whole thing. Both bands started at virtually the same time (the Pistols in 1972, though under a different name, played the same music --- the music for Seventeen and Did You No Wrong were written during this period; the Ramones started in 1973, just a bunch of high school friends starting a band, really), not having the slightest influence on each other in the process...

...Until 1978, when Johnny Ramone started taking cues from Steve Jones. He admitted this on the End Of The Century DVD, and you can hear it for yourself on their Road To Ruin album, which kicks ass. Basically, Jonesy inspired Johnny to play better, and he certainly did.

Sorry for the rant. As for the worst Punk band? As far as actual Punk Rock goes, I think the worst of the lot was Black Flag... And I like them quite a bit.

The thread title is "Popular Bands You Hate: Punk", which would imply that I my vote should be based on
a) Popularity,
b) Personal Dislike,
c) Actually Being Punk.
There's not a lot of bands that can fit all three criteria.
And, shockgasphorror, you haven’t heard of Hüsker Dü?
I've seen them mentioned a few times on NS, once talked with some guy at a party who loved them, and that is about the extent to which I've seen their name mentioned, which makes them marginally more popular than Joydrop.

I’d say they’re fairly popular over here. That’s why I was so surprised at HNF’s comments.

Mind you I was born and bred on late 70s, early 80s hardcore, as were most of my friends.

I’d always assumed they were known about in the same sort of way as Minor Threat, Dead Kennedys or Black Flag...

Heh, you'd be surprised. Though their albums sold far more than all of those bands, and they toured relentlessly, people as a whole seem to have forgotten them. It's quite ironic, as in 1987, they were just about to break through as a megahit. They even played on the Joan Rivers Show (now Late Night with Conan O'Brien). They were even at fucking Pink Pop in 1987.

Seriously, I can ask random people about these bands, and two out of ten will know who the Dead Kennedys and Black Flag are. Four out of ten will know who Minor Threat are. None will know who, or what, Husker Du are. Believe me, I've asked plenty of people...

I heard he wasn’t actually trying, he was just trying to get people who had heard his music to check out the Greens.
That’s cool by me.

That’s the list of people who voted for the Dead Kennedys. Do you notice anything suspicious about the voters?
Shockgasphorror!

Cheater!!!

*points*

What I find suspicious is all the people voting against/for the Pistols. What’s with the hate, guys?
Years of Malcolm McLaren’s PR?

Seriously though, I just don’t think they’re very good. I mean, Sid may have looked very nice’n’punk, but he couldn’t play for shit. And as our very own JB said, they have a lot less output than most of the bands on the list.

I like the Pistols. I like "Pretty Vacant" and a couple others (Anarchy in the UK, God Save the Queen, EMI...)

The fact that they disintegrated so quickly is part of what I like about them.

Fair nuff.

Personally, if you handed me a bunch of punk albums, Never Mind The Bollocks would be low on my list to play.

Ain’t subjective media great?

I prefer the Dead Kennedys and the Clash to the Sex Pistols, but I still like them.

And the Pistols made a fucking mockery out of an entire country. Publicly.

Can you say the same about the other two?

And that is why they can't be the worst punk band. I'll admit that not all of there stuff is the best music ive ever heard, but they got a whole country to HATE them. I love it!

And the gold part is, they weren't even trying. It was all thanks to Malcolm's absolutely abysmal PR that such a thing happened.

The man was a liar and a fucking thief. He was a liar because of the whole "I created the Sex Pistols" thing, and he was a thief because he swindled the band members for every fucking penny they earned, giving them an "allowance" of 45 pounds a week apiece.

Mind you, they sued his worthless ass for almost everything he had back in the 1980s, and the won the case very quickly.

That's why all of these "best" and "worst" lists are complete idiocy. The whole damn thing is subjective, and let's face it, even somebody has to like Terry and the Idiots.

Well, the answer to that question really depends on whether Terry is allowed to vote or not.

Taste in music does not maketh the girl.

But if she likes Fallout Boy, at least never listen to music together. It's best to avoid actually arguing with someone who thinks Fallout Boy is better then Black Sabbath. Hasn't happened to me, but god forbid..

Ok. Kewl.

There was actually a serious band with mentally handicapped people in it? That's horrible!

It's okay Johnny, we all make mistakes sometimes ;) :p :fluffle:

Anyway, I know a Greenday fangirl... :headbang:

Yeah. Liking her cost me a year of life, and I only got neuroticity and stress. She was the girl in the Johnny needs helpage thread. As for the Green Day fangirl, it's ok. :fluffle:

Green Day is not a horrible band. However, it is by far an overrated band. Much like the Beatles.

Yeah. American Idiot is actually okay, but nowhere comparable to such rock classics as Black Sabbath. The Beatles are okay too, but their best is Helter Skelter.

All much more influential and better bands then those.

Smunk, a word of advice... Without Husker Du, Green Day never would've come into existence. Listen to Grant Hart's songs, and then listen to early Green Day. The similarities are striking.

Though Hart's songs were a hundred times better, because the musicians performing them weren't shit.
