Reflection.

Well, tomorrow is the pointless graduation ceremony for me. If you want to find out why I think it's pointless, then go here (http://a-10warthog.blogspot.com/2007/05/graduation-ceremony.html). However, as pointless as the Ceremony is, it is a time for reflection, to see what you accomplished, and to see how far you come. As I look back on the past four years, I went from Information Technology, to Teaching, to Archivist. I failed one computer class (re-took it and got an A) so I tried teaching. That was going ok until it was time to start my student teaching, well surprise, surprise, I got rejected because of my speech impediment. So I had to switch majors from Secondary Education to History. I managed to graduate from college on time, but it didn't do much good. I was rejected from Chapel Hill, and NC State when I applied for their grad program. Now I wait for Summer class to start and to see if I can get into Winston Salem State University grad program as a Occupational Therapist.

As I look back in the past four years, I realized something, I did absolutely crap. I changed majors three times, and the end result was no job, living at home with my parents, and basically having to put my life on hold and I'm twenty three years old, how sad is that? As I try to go for Occupational Therapist, I really do have concerns on whether or not I'd actually be successful and actually get somewhere, or will it just end in failure again. As I look back, I realized one thing, I should've gone into journalism. During my time at Pfeiffer, I wrote for their newspaper, and I was actually pretty good at it, I wrote some very good articles. If you want to see what I think is my best, click here. (http://a-10warthog.blogspot.com/2006_08_01_archive.html) Scroll down to " Religion Vs. Free Speech (an article I wrote for the college newspaper)".

For those who are going to college, I have a few piece of advice to offer. 1. Arts degree are worthless, no one will hire you, so don't even waste your time with it. 2. Make sure you'll actually be able complete the damn program, and see if theres going to be any problems with you being able to complete it. 3. Do not mess around, college is serious business and it's not a time to party, get drunk and have wild sex. Especially work hard if you plan on going to grad school because grad school do look at your GPA and they only want high GPAs. Don't make the same stupid mistakes that I've made that put me in this situation, which I am not to happy about at the moment.

I sympathize with you. I went to college in Pittsburgh 4 years ago at the age of 19. I originally had no major but decided on graphic design with a minor in bussiness. I went breakneck to try and get the competitive edge and took 4 or 5 years worth of classes in 2 years, had an overall GPA of 3.83 and one hell of an impressive working portfolio. But, other than the occasional freelance job and basic web designing for my ex proffessor I have not ever used those skills for any real purpose. I can't afford graduate school and not too many offer a degree in graphic design anyway.

I'm certified to use flash, html and all that web tripe as well as various archetectural and industrial programs but can not find a job anywhere. I got a lucky break while working for an amusement park (more degrading than even McDonald's) when I was using a microphone to entertain the guests at my game... now I work part time as a DJ.

I too have no money, live with my parents, and all that other stuff and I am also 23 now. I know how you feel man...

Bwahah, I don'y mean to laugh(well I do, but I mean it as happy laughter not mocking) but really you have just left higher education and here you post how crap your life, is, before you have done anything with it?

I mean you're 23, you have for all porpouses just finished your education, you're just at the start of your life man.

If it makes you feel any better I've also made some bad choices - I did Law in my first year, hated it, then decided to go off to Sweden to do Economics there. Hated that too, so I came back to the UK to do Economics with Philosophy instead. Now I am doing well, but it's only my first year really. My only concern is that the quantitative part of the course will be too much to cope with later, though I am determined not to allow that to happen. I've also wasted an inordinate amount of finances (in addition to that year I lost), but luckily I have a rather generous bank loan (even if I have to repay it later). Indecision can be excruciatingly annoying, especially when you're 20. :)

Yes, but compared to my family, I'm still waiting for takeoff. At 23, my parents were married, had their first child and have two full time jobs. At 23, my brother would've already graduated from his master program at UNCC in accounting, married and had a home with his wife, and his wife already finished school and had a full time job at a hospital.

I strongly disagree with that. I didn't do nearly enough of those things at university, and I regret that more than "only" getting a 2.1 instead of a first; my degree has been precious little use getting me jobs, so you might as well use the opportunity to have fun, make sure you do enough work to not get kicked out, and hope you meet someone really important who'll give you a job anyway. And if not; hey, it was fun!

not really that sad at all, it could be better, but a lot of people change majors a few times, are jobless and live at home with their parents. You're 23, i'm pretty sure my parents are going to have to help me at least until i'm 25.

As I try to go for Occupational Therapist, I really do have concerns on whether or not I'd actually be successful and actually get somewhere, or will it just end in failure again.

you do have your diploma don't you? why wouldn't you succeed at 'Occupational therapy'? i don't get why you quit after just one failed class (wich you did ok afterwards), that doesn't really sound like a failure to me.

As I look back, I realized one thing, I should've gone into journalism. During my time at Pfeiffer, I wrote for their newspaper, and I was actually pretty good at it, I wrote some very good articles. maybe you should trie to get into journalism then, i have a friend who's going to combine studying and his job, i don't know how university is where you live, but i don't see why that wouldn't be possible.

For those who are going to college, I have a few piece of advice to offer. 1. Arts degree are worthless, no one will hire you, so don't even waste your time with it.

art can be quite interesting, there are other things you can go to school for than for a job. the experience or because it interests you for instance.

2. Make sure you'll actually be able complete the damn program, and see if theres going to be any problems with you being able to complete it.

that's good advice but there really isn't a way to tell except for trying.

3. Do not mess around, college is serious business and it's not a time to party, get drunk and have wild sex. Especially work hard if you plan on going to grad school because grad school do look at your GPA and they only want high GPAs.

i don't really get the concept of grad school, but i think you should have a little bit of balance in your life. Fun is ok if it doesn't really interfere a lot with your results. you can't study all the time, so whe you're not you can always get drunk or have wild sex, or both.

Don't make the same stupid mistakes that I've made that put me in this situation, which I am not to happy about at the moment.

i hope i didn't sound like i was trying to minimalize your problems, because i wasn't. you just sound very pessimistic. anyway, good luck with the rest of you life, and you sound like you could use a :fluffle:

If you can, go back to school for journalism. You said you liked it and were good at it and when you are finished you will have two degrees which isn't bad. However I would disagree about A & S majors. You can get hired in a lot of places, if you know where to look. At times that can take creativity however. Also you say take college seriously and don't party and sex and all that, but I thought you had said you didn't really have a social life in college so why the low grades?

Wilgrove, you have had a tough year. You know what? everyone has.

I really really really really don't like people who say things like "I have to put my life on hold"

nobody puts their life on hold, nobody.

You are living right now, there is no break, whatever it is that's going to make you happy, figure it out and do it. Life sucks sometimes (most of the time) and it's hard, and it never stops and it never lets up, and you never get a break......that's just the way it is. Quit whining.

For every sucky thing that happens to you something worse is happening to someone else, and still they continue to fight. Giving up is not an option, so quit acting like it is.

The past is the past, the future is unknown, right now is all that matters.

It seems to be the rule of thumb in cities with large student populations. I finished an Arts degree (psych & phil) last year after working 12+ years in IT. You'd think with all that experience plus a degree it would be easy to find a job ? Nuh-uh. It took me a year to get a job on half the salary I was on before going to university 4 years ago... but having said that, this was the result of a career change, and so was expected - I have no regrets.

Just keep looking, even if you work a job without many future prospects you'll still have breathing room to look for other jobs that do.
