We all know that recycling is good right? Recycling ensures that our natural resources last longer than they ordinarily would, it also ensures our envireonment stays clean and that the entire world doesn't get taken up by landfills; thus ensuring that our children and our grandchildren on down the line have a place to live. Well, something many of you may not know is that even though web space is not in itself real space, it still requires that something real takes up space somewhere on our planet! The internet is expanding every day at a phenominal pace and continues to expand even faster by the day. In today's age of information technology we never know when or where the internet will pop-up next!

Well folks, the sad truth of the matter is, the more webspace we use, the more space the web uses on our beautiful planet Earth! You see, for each and every byte of space used on the internet, there must be something somewhere that contains that used byte, keeping this in mind we must realize that the device that contains said space must also be connected to another device that makes that device run and on down the line until you realize that for each byte of space on the internet a small amount of real life things are used.
This is only a tiny example... Bill posts yet another dumb picture of his cat Cuddles on his website that nobody ever bothers looking at (except for Bill), that picture takes up another 200 kilobytes of space on Bill's website and he is very nearly out of space, what is he to do! He contacts his website hosting service and requests even more webspace so he can post even more cat pictures! Now because Bill has got another 700 gigabytes of webspace the hosting company needs more servers. Those servers each take up part of a room in a building who's soul purpose is to do nothing but be filled up with large, bulky, and expensive pieces of computer equipment that are for no other purpose than to create webspace.

Now, to build those servers someone has to harvest minerals from our planets crust; and to use valuable oil to create the plastics that provide the protective outer case of the server... and of course another server means greater power usage! Greater power useage means even more fossil fuels are used up, polluting our air and and marring our planets landscape with even more strip mines; contributing to lung cancer, gobal warming, ozone depletion, and generally just bad things for mother earth. Keeping this in mind please remember... recycle your webspace!

Even though the internet is expanding, the size of servers needed to store information are getting smaller. Whether web space needs recycling depends on what continues to grow faster, the internet or data storage technology.

Ah, righto.
One thing against that; hard disks only have a finite lifetime, and you generally want to replace them before they die, rather than afterwards. You're not going to replace an array of old disks with those of the same size, you're going to pick modern disks that're more reliable and have a greater capacity (and will require about the same amount of resources to build). So the overall capacity of the system can increase quite dramatically, simply by performing normal maintenance.

But it does annoy me when I receive an HTML email with an attached Word document which contains a series of images of text in a slightly unusual font. GAH! What kind of stupidity generates such things? Hundreds of kilobytes of storage and bandwidth wasted for no reason what-so-ever. Why not just type the jokes (and that's all the images of text ever are) into a plaintext email and send them like that? Hundreds of times smaller, for exactly the same thing.
And websites with images everywhere. Pointless animated gifs weighing in at a meg each. Flash. Argh! People who do such things need putting out of our misery with a hammer.

Every byte is sacred, every byte is great... If a byte is wasted I get quite irate...
Every byte is sacred, every byte is good... Every byte is needed in your Network Neighbourhood...

Bwhahahahahh yeah I fuckin' agree. Only though coz I work in the trade. It constantly supprises me just how many people do not know how to do the most basic of things with their computers, or fail to understand the most basic principles! Astounding, I mean I love that it is so(I like to keep employed) but what other tool are you actualy allowed to use everyday in a business enviroment without knowing how to bloody work the thing?

I had to explain that in order to move data(ohh sorry love I mean this document(coz they don't even understand the word data)) from one folder to another it is easyer to open two windows and just drag and drop it!

Drag and drop, how do I do that? Bwahhahahah!

LOL, I could never do that job, because then I'd end up yelling at the idiot, calling them idiots and ranting at them about how they should probably sell their computers and just go back to watching the Teletubbies.

This isn't necessarily true, actually. Some forms of recycling require so much energy that it would be better for the environment if you simply harvest new materials.

Also, I don't see what the downside of landfills is. If we need those materials later, we can always mine the landfills for them.
