I went to see a tribute band the other night and thought they were pretty good considering they were trying to be Queen (they were called Kings of Queen which I thought was pretty catchy)

Anyone seen any other good/bad/crappy ones they want to mention?

I've seen Me First & The Gimme Gimmes. They're excellent. :)

And the Australian Pink Floyd - absolutely awesome, from what I remember. There are gaps in my weed-filled memory of that night. :p

I love that bands name and the song selection/execution is pretty cool at times as well.

I want to start a Dead Kennedys tribute band called either the Rotting Kennedys or the Maggot-Ridden Kennedys.

Because I can.

Also what's the difference between a tribute band and a cover band?

Zombie Kennedys?

A tribute band plays only one band's songs, a cover band plays songs from several artists.

If you get a chance to see Great Gig in the Sky (Pink Floyd) or TNT (AC/DC)...do it!

I want to start a Rush tribute band named By-Tor and the Snow Dogs. :D

Helles Belles (http://www.hellsbelles.info/), the all female AC/DC cover band is fantastic. They are the only AC/DC cover band endorsed by Angus Young. AC/DC asked them to tour with them as a matter of fact. They couldn't due to contractual obligations.:(

Floydian Slips are a great Pink Floyd cover band. They have the lazer show from the Pulse tour. They really are first rate.

Dread Zeppelin (http://www.dreadzeppelin.com/) is also pretty cool. And I believe they are the only cover band endorsed by Robert Plant.

i've only seen an oasis tribute act before, they were pretty average.

i think the best name of tribute act i've encountered is Travesty, a Travis tribute band.

I saw Thin Lizzy just a couple of years ago. They were opening for Deep Purple.

Yes, I know Phil is dead. John Sykes was singing.

Bjorn Again is a pretty good ABBA tribute band.

By-Tor and the Snow Dogs is the best band name ever. That even beats Sweep the Leg Johnny.

I prefer The Homeland and It's Insecurities.

Also The Third Continental Congress.

Led Zepagain is also a pretty good band, endorsed by Jimmy Page. :D

Tribute bands blow. All of them. Hands down. Real bands make their own music.

I'm sure most artists in tribute bands continue to compose their own music.

Sucks a little wind out of that statement when it comes from a nation named after The Wu-Tang Clan.

When I lived in San Francisco and was sitting in with the brewery band, I tried to put together a Spinal Tap tribute band called Spinaltackular. I think it was a little too post-modern, even for The City.

I think Sweep the Leg Johnny is a song. In fact, it is (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFlQNtL8F9s&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Findustrialdisease%2Eblogspot%2Ecom%2F), from the band No More Kings, in an apparent attempt to see if they can reach a pop culture reference critical mass...

EDIT: My bad, a scroll down on that youtube page uncovers a band named Sweep the Leg, Johnny.

My brother had a band named "Stick Man Lincoln" after discovering there was a little stick figure of Lincoln on the back of pennies, and my favorite band he's been in was "Tuna Free Dolphin Sandwich"

And not a bad wee band they were, neither. Saw them about 2000 when they were touring Europe and they played in our cafe space. Good show.

You should check out his new band (http://www.angelfire.com/rock/grumpy/home.html). The name isn't as clever, but meh...(unfortunately you have to go to their myspace page linked on that page to hear them). [/shameless promotion of my little brother...]
