TUESDAY, May 8 (HealthDay News) -- A certain form of a protein called neuropsin, which plays a role in learning and memory, is expressed only in the central nervous system of humans, concludes a Chinese study that compared the DNA of humans to several species of monkeys and apes.

The finding gives valuable insight into the evolution of the human brain, says a team from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Kunming.

The study also found that type II neuropsin found in humans originated about five million years ago. Type II neuropsin is a longer form of the protein.

The findings, which contribute to the understanding of human cognition, are expected to be published online in the journal Human Mutation.

The researchers said that a mutation specific to humans triggers a change in the splicing pattern of the neuropsin gene, creating a new splicing site and a longer protein. When the scientists introduced this mutation into chimpanzees, they started to produce type II neuropsin.

Oh, and I bet the already intelligent chimpanzees became MORE intelligent...

There seem to be restrictions on certain types of research in Western countries, based on the idea that perhaps some experiments should never be conducted (for moral or ethical reasons). It would appear that the Chinese in this instance really don't care to limit their research.

Yeah, a bunch of monkeys would really hand China's army it's ass.

Why would monkeys want sugar caves? Now banana plantations, they'll love them.

That was shit. Anyway, humans evolved from gaining this mutation, I don't see any problem with seeing the affects of seeing monkies with this mutation. Can you imagine we could create a new race of intelligent beings? I think that would rock.

No, but the Chinese always do stuff that, even theoretically, could harm humanity. Like breeding like rabbits, or accelerating their economy to the point that when they inevitably crash into a wall, the world goes with them.

Pointless fact: in Japan, blonde hair usually denotes a foreigner, outsider or another race. Case in point: Saiyans, Al-Bhed, Naruto.

And yes, I'm aware that that is a Hong Kong film. Inspired by Japan's "Hey, what other crazy shit haven't we done?" attitude!

It's like how the US forbade experimental human research into teen addiction patterns, so the researchers went to Africa to get kids hooked on smokes for science.

Oh joy, even more "intelligent" beings about whose rights I'll probably be violating in one way or another simply by existing.
On t'other hand, since this is China doing it, maybe we can actually put this technology to good use by breeding a race of subhuman slaves to do all our work in tunnels miles beneath the Earth.

If we bring them into society as a "new race of intelligent beings" that is exactly where we're going to end up. Instead, we need to put them in their place from the start, and by "place (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6cF_1zQ5MU)" I mean standing on the M-Machines, twiddling knobs and periodically getting exploded for no apparent reason.

It's not as though China has an exemplary record of caring for those who dig underneath the earth. Their lack of safety provisions and the hundreds who die in Chinese mines every year are proof that they think little of it.

Plus, they have plenty of spare humans.

Why they would bother with chimps (unless chimps work harder or longer) is beyond me.

Of course shorter lifespans means faster evolution.

They aren't on the same scale as primates when you test their intelligence.

We also need to give them better blood so that they can roam on land for a longer time period. Of course if they could stay out on land for a longer period of time we would have find a way to stop people abusing them.

They only live a few years, primates live decades. It's hardly a fair comparison.

Part of the problem is that a LOT of an octopus' brain is occupied with processing tactile information.

I agree that if they lived longer they would have a greater amount of knowlege and better ways of using it's intelligence, it is just I don't think that you'd get to chimp level.
