Ok, last night the guy in the room opposite me in halls came home at half three in the morning with some friends, making a lot of noise. They woke me up (which means they must have been pretty loud, i dont wake easily!) and therefore after giving them ten mins to see if they would shut up on their own i went over, knocked on his door and said *insert whiney just woken up voice here* "Please shut up, i've got an exam tomorow".
I got up this morning (for my exam) and saw he had left a note on my door, which i assumed would be an apology until i read it. It said:
"I know you have an exam but out of respect, me and my pals kept the noise down but do not hassle me again."

Now, am i just being uppety cause i wasnt really very polite to them last night, or is it him thats being rude?

Of course you're in the right. People like that are assholes and never seem to get the fact that they're not the only ones in the damn building.

You could have just said that the noise is too much and people are trying to sleep. By using a whiney tone and telling them to shut-up, you created a bad impression when you otherwise would have been well within your rights. Especially if it was his first offense. You should have been a little more cautious with your words. The second time, I can see you losing it, and the third time, don't even bother, just call the cops and report the noise. There are bylaws that exist to allow people to make complaints when the noise level is at a certain level after certain hours.

Actually, he's not so much being rude as trying to save face. He probably realized that he was being incosiderate and that's why they quieted down, but he's probably feeling the need to assert himself on some level and tacked on the part about not hassling him. Chances are, things are probably settled as they are.

I would say he was being rude, but I CAN NOT side with someone who doesn't capitalize the word (not the letter) "I", even in their title.

Aah, that would probably explain it.

That's why you wait until his exams and at about 3am you wander over to outside his door and you blast a foghorn.

Repeat every 15mins until he cries.

You were right, they were wrong.

If you live in an apartment, you must deal with the fact that you have neighbors who are only separated from you by a wall or two. You must keep your noise down.

We've got some rude neighbors who think they get to play loud music whenever they want. After giving them three polite requests to quiet down, we're in the process of getting them evicted. Three strikes and you're out. :D

I would like to have been more polite, really i would, but i am not at my best when woken up at half three in the morning the night before an exam. It doesnt really bring out my best qualities.

May I suggest.... slaughtered bunny nailed to his door perchance....?

No? No, takers? Fine.

You were in the right. It used to happen to me and my old roommates in college - until I roared at them to "STFU or I'll 'pee' in your beds"....

It worked.... kinda.

That's why you count to 10 before you go out the door to give him a piece of your mind.

I learned the hard way on that. People do not respond well to people who complain about something but do it in a rude way.

If he does it again, keep track of it and when it hits strike 3, don't even try to reason with him. Let the cops make it clear that this kind of behaviour isn't warranted when there are people who are sleeping at 3am.

I can understand that. I was in a similar situation on a field trip once, and I went completely apeshit, but it didn't really help.

And what 'exams' are you doing?

Arcetecture, applicable mathematics, mathematical methods, and mechanical engineering.

When i say studying agriculture i dont mean in the pretty much a geography and biology mix sort of course, i mean the techniques of what to do with your tractor. Yes, that gets my scorn, yes you will rip shreds out of me because of that, but no im not going to not feel scorn because i i feel it degrades the whole concept of a degree and is simply an excuse to avoid growing up for a little longer.

Heh. I had some like that, but I fought back. After several nights of being woken up at two or three AM by crappy house music, I decided that my neighbors were going to be treated to an entire day of my...eclectic, shall we say?...music collection blared at full volume. After being forced to endure about eight hours of everything from Philip Glass to the Muppet Babies, strangely enough, my neighbors never played their crappy music too loudly again. :p

Depends how loud loud is. It's uni, after all. Generally I put up with a bit of noise at night in exchange for the leeway to make my own. :p

Weird. Almost the exact same thing happened to me last night, except I wasn't the person who went out to tell the guy(s) to shut up.

On a training trek in March one tent group wouldn't shut it at like 3 when we had to trek the moors at 9.

Me and the other 2 guys in our tent couldn't sleep as we were about 10 feet away, it was worse for me as I was in dier need of the loo.

Eventually we got to sleep.

In the morning while sorting our gear and taking apart the tent in semi conciousness one of the guys from my group took there boots out of the tent and left them out on the hillside. Bear in mind this is in the moors in misty morning whether, if anything is out of the tent for 2 minutes it is completely soaked.

Our group leader didn't think that was enough so we all spent nearly an hour struggling up and over a 400m hill with a punishing steepness to it.

Was a good trek.
