I thought it was a foul up on his part on how he said it.
I imagine what he was trying to say was, 'without Britain we could have never celebrated 200 years in 1976'

The Queen got him back:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Queen flashed a bit of royal wit at President George W. Bush on Tuesday, getting back at him for a faux pas a day earlier thatnearly placed her in the 18th century.
With a playful grin, the queen opened a dinner toast to the president saying: "I wondered whether I should start this toast by saying, 'When I was here in 1776...'"
The 104 guests invited to the black-tie gathering at the home of British ambassador David Manning erupted in laughter. Bush laughed along and the queen smiled broadly before continuing with her text.
This hasn't been the first time that protocol was violated during a Queen's visit to America during the Bush years I believe. I believe that once when Elizabeth visited the US under Bush, she had to make a speech, but the podium was built so that when Bush introduced her, he could see over the podium, but when she took the stand, the podium was too tall for her. The Queen is of much shorter stature than Bush. There wasn't a step laid for her behind the podium that would have let her see over the top. So the whole time she was making the speech, you could only see her hat.
The next day when addressing the Congress, she first said, "I do hope you can see me today."
She was greeted with uproarious laughter and applause.

You know, Bush says some truly idiotic things, and does so fairly frequently. But to add this to the list is just petty - and I've seen people (elsewhere, not so much here) using this as the ultimate example of Bush's stupidity. I'm no fan of the guy, but give him a break - it was a simple slip of the tongue that anyone could have made. And he recognized it, caught himself in mid-slip, and corrected himself. And then was able to joke about it, as was the Queen.
So, on the scale of Bushisms, this ranks about 1.5 out of 10. No big deal.
I do admit to being pleasantly surprised that NSG has, on the whole, been able to give this the attention it deserves, which is very little.

you need to take a look at the video. it was funny but it wasnt a major gaff. he didnt get the words "1776" out. he stopped himself after the "17" and corrected to "1976".
then he turned to look at her pointedly.
it was funny.

According to historical records, Richard Cromwell, George III and Victoria all died at the age of 81.

Watched 'The Madness of King George' last night. When George III went insane and during that time we lost the U.S colonies (spit). Maybe the Madness of [king] George W Shrub could summon an end to independance. The Queen should snap his kneck like a twig, roundhouse kick the secret service and build a throne in the oval office.
Anyone here considered that it might have been a joke? Anyone?
Maybe, except this is the same guy who... well...

You do realize the guy was joking around right? I mean come on haven't you got anything better to pick at on him rather than an attempt to make an old woman smile a little bit? Hell my grandmother would have laughed at that joke. Hell I tease her all the time about what it was like when the North one the civil war.

i would love to hear what bush is thinking during some of his speeches. i bet he goes through a thousand thoughts when he has to give a long speech. and it probably ranges from really funny stuff to really serious stuff. watch him when he speaks, sometimes its almost obvious he is thinking about something else.
