It's no joke...check out this link (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/6584011.stm) from the BBC. Makes me wonder what someone exploring the sea floor centuries from now will find.

The mapping of this landscape could also raise questions about its preservation, says Professor Gaffney - and how it can be protected from activities such as pipe-laying and the building of wind farms.

"It would be a mistake to think that these people were unsophisticated or without culture... they would have had names for the rivers and hills and spiritual associations - it would have been a catastrophic loss," says Professor Gaffney.

yes. a catastrophe... 4000 years in the making.

second only to Jurassic Park, a catastrophe 65 million years in the making.

lost city of Atlantis!

Actually, there are stories about sunken cities and Great Floods everywhere. Looks like the end of the latest Ice Age has brought some heavy changes to the world.
In the Ice Age, the northern half of the Adriatic sea was just the terminal part of the Po Valley; the Black Sea was very likely a grassy plain, etc etc.

On the other side, I thought that the myth of Atlantis was linked to the volcanic explosion of the island of Thera (Santorini) in the Aegean - the subsequent tsunamis and earthquakes led to the downfall of the Minoic civilisation of Crete.

Which would account for the flood stories in the Bible.

Many people believe that.:)

Very cool, but £10 says that some Creationist website will be referencing it as proof of the flood by the end of the week. :p

I'm sure if they look again they will see that the tide merely went out and they are looking at Middlesborough. It can be confused with a prehistoric civilization sometimes.

I loved that show. Wasn't as good after they had to switch the original "dad" actor, though.

What amuses me about this story is the need to "protect" this area. I mean, sure, do a few digs, recover any artifacts if we can. BUT IT'S A FRIGGIN' SEABED, FOR GRODD'S SAKE! Make the maps, work out what it looked like, learn what we can, but there's really nothing left to protect!

the bible's flood story is far too young

In terms of when it was written down, true, but it likely existed as an oral tradition for who knows how long previous to that.

Which would account for the flood stories in the Bible.No. The biblical flood happened around 3113 BCE, and although it was not limited to the Mesopotamian basin, the pre-biblical story about it originated from there.
