Is it me or has this place got alot stricter since I was last here...just been flitting through moderation and it seems people are getting reported on for the most trivial of things...ok...if there is a nation who is really breaking the rules of the site then fair enough...throw the book at them...they deserve it ;)
but seems to me like people are being reported for next to nothing...and as for the people reporting them...I bet you write into the paper every week telling them that the flagstone at the end of your road is 1.11378 mm above local planning law height....rearrange these words people...rearrange these words

It's strict as hell. Every day I'm on NS I find myself editing one or more of my posts to avoid the appearance of flaming so I don't get booted. Kinda sucks.

I actually think it's better to have people reporting minor infractions. It means there are fewer serious infractions to report. It also means I don't have to spend as much time on average banning people or warning them.
What bothers me is when things that are not infractions get reported as if they were the harbingers of DOOM!111!1

Im not having a pop at the moderators...they have a job to do and they do it...but users report the most bizarre and trivial things that would have been laughed at back in the day hehe

Not really, I think its just that the standard of behaviour has improved, so the smaller offences are actually noticed.
And if I remember correctly, people used to be moderated for swearing, whereas now we can say "fuck" without worrying about consequences.
EDIT: Also, I hardly ever see anyone warned nowadays, and the only deats seem to be for obvious troll spamming.

Unless you say it in a thread title.

define trolling
Sorta like flamebaiting I think.
...also gravedigging?!? WTF IS THAT??
Posting in a thread that hasn't been posted in for ages (like a year, or something).

This post (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=8784641&postcount=3) has definitions of both trolling and gravedigging.
You may want to read all the posts in that thread, actually.

Trolling is basically flamebaiting, posting something idiotic and offensive to get responses.
Gravedigging just posting in old threads where there's nothing new to say to bump them back to the top page I think.

Well, posters are expected to just create a new topic after that time. It's called gravedigging because the topic is treated as "dead and buried" (debated to death, perhaps).
I think part of the reason is because the posters in the thread (particularly the OP) might be long gone, or their views changed in that time.
It's just considered better to create a new original thread, even if the subject is similar.

When you tell people who report rules violations to "LIFE A GET" and suggest that they write in to the paper to complain about the most minor things, what are you doing?
You're insulting a group of people, which is what trolling essentially is on this site. It's pretty minor in this case, all things considered, but you should at least be aware that lobbing insults at a group of people is not the best way to go.
Try making a genuine case for them to change their ways instead.

there are indeed certain elements on here who have a high intolerance of spam/fun/lighthearted threads. there was a poster not long ago who seemed to spend most of his time in moderation reporting threads, he got shouted down but ended up getting mod support cuz he was in fact supporting the rules even though he was being a dick about it.
i think it's just a function of a moderated forum accumulating rules as it gets older and people just getting used to them.
I find flirting with the mods to be quite useful.
