To me, they're just a way to help people find music - if they can give examples of bands they like, you can say well <band> are the same genre.
It's certainly not a perfect method, though, and people get into stupid fights based on which genres they like, but it's still useful to a degree, I think.

When you say screaming, are you referring specifically to those hardcore style scream vocals or are you including all non-clean vocals, e.g. death metal, black metal?
Or better: What's an example of a band with "screaming" vocals?

Of course, now that Vibeke Stene has left Tristania I will no longer listen to them. The growls are enjoyable, but it is her ghost-like voice I am interested in. And I agree, I like that one. :) Liv Kristine has an awesomely mellow voice, which goes nicely with the growls.

It really is a shame how many of these bands lose good singers - Nightwish fired Tarja, Theatre of Tragedy fired Liv, Vibeke left Tristania... All incredible singers, maybe even irreplaceable.
Eh, time will tell. Nell isn't bad, and we'll find out who the new Nightwish singer is at the end of the month.

Qntal is of all the oddest. :) It uses lyrics in old European languages I cannot even begin to discern, except perhaps that they are older versions of germanic and romance tongues, often latinicised. If you're familiar with Flamma, I like the version of Latin they use in that. :D

I've converted a couple people to Qntal. :D By far one of the most unique and obscure bands I've ever come across, but wonderful to listen to. I couldn't understand the lyrics to save my life, but I don't mind. I always figured it was mostly old German, French, and Latin.

Black metal.
And for not metal but still aggressive as fuck, grindcore, powerviolence, crust, industrial, gabber and emoviolence. :D
Speed metal includes NWOBHM and similar stuff as well as alot of albums by bands that later switched to thrash. Thrash metal is speed metal + thrash/hardcore and first started to become a distinct style around 1984. Thrash is heavier old school hardcore with two guitars, emerging around 1981. Crossover thrash is thrash + thrash metal, like Stormtroopers of Death.
Essentially speed metal split into two distinct camps by the mid 80s, more melodic power metal and more aggressive thrash metal, the confusing thing is how much overlap and crossover there is with in metal and 'extreme music' in general.

Thrash is my favorite metal genre, but it's followed closely by progressive metal, espescially prog metal bands that have a thrash feel to them, like Symphony X. I'm someone who can sit and listen through Operation Mindcrime or Octavarium in their entireties, so I don't really mind long songs.
