Noblest thing a Human has ever done...

After all the bummer from "Worst thing Humanity has ever done", I created this. What was the noblest action/sacrifice made by a human, or group of them? Livio Lebrescu? The Alamo? Someone throwing themselves on a grenade? Please state.

I'd say anyone in Category: People who helped Jews during the Holocaust (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:People_who_helped_Jews_during_the_Holocaust) is a candidate.

Hear hear!

I'd also suggest each and every single soldier that fought the National Socialist Germany's Armies in WWII (I hate calling them Nazi's even though that's the common term).

And all those who helped abolish the slave trade.

History is full of people that have done acts worthy of commendation, it'd be nigh-on impossible to commend them all.

But here's to trying nonetheless.

The truly most noble human acts may never be known, because the person/people committing them are too noble to ever let their nobleness be known! OMG!

Jesus sacrificing His life for our sins. That is the noblest thing recorded. For some reason only evil actions are remembered through time and no matter how good an action is it is usually forgotten sooner and easier. So it is going to be hard to answer this question and you probably won't get many answers.

Seconded.

Mahatma Gandhi.

No way. He was a good guy, but not perfect. I know it was the norm for the time, but he was still a racist fuck as far as blacks were concerned.

Those people who dedicate their lives to helping the less fortunate, receiving no rewards or recognition for their achievements, would qualify in my book. Plus it might be the first suggestion so far that does not involve somebody dying horribly!

Meh. Not like he had a choice. If some random skinheads beat me up in the street, and during it I say "I'm sacrificing myself for all the innocent in the world" that isn't really noble, since I was being beaten anyway.

But Jesus could have escaped or used their own rules against them but he chose not to.

Last night, I went two whole hours without peeing out a third story window and into the crowd of people below me. Regretfully, a few freshman made the mistake of standing there for three hours.
Ah well, one can only be so noble before they just can't take the sheer, crushing weight of their own magnaminity.

Though I am in Canada, and was not subjected to the events of that horrible day, I and my kin forever salute that brave, brave man, and the noble sacrifice he made for humanity.

May you spray the crops of heaven, friend. You'll always be in our hearts.

I'd say Jesus ranks up there pretty high, simply because he gave his life only for something that he 'believed' to be true, without there being evidence of its existence. That's pretty fucking noble.

In that vein, Gandhi comes in a close second. There was an obvious reason for him to put himself through the tortures he did. He was also able to witness the positive effects it had.

On a much more mundane scale... I'd have to say parenting.

Seriously, does anybody stop to think about how noble it is to put your own dreams by the wayside to raise a couple of brats to adulthood?

Let's give it up for the parents!

I'm assuming nobility in that situation is forfeited if it involves an explosive vest.

now, I'm using a rather strict definition for nobility here, which is somewhat different from my definition of good.

I would say the noblest thing any human ever did is when Socrates drank the hemlock, even though he could have got out of it. He effectively martyred himself to the idea of principle.

If Jesus truly died for our sins, wouldn't it be ungrateful of us not to commit them?

On topic, (grin) I consider the invention of dynamite to be a Nobel act.

You do know Mohammed was inspired to found Islam after he saw what Christianity did for people? He also taught that Christ was a prophet. I know you were being sarcastic and all trying to upset unintelligent Christians, but I just thought I should set the record straight. Also, if you were indeed trying to parry the Jesus comment, you did it unfairly as the Christian fellow DID NOT attack Islam, as your comment did Christianity.

The noblest thing is to risk one's own well being for the life of a stranger, as in the story of the NY construction worker who threw himself atop a complete stranger in the subway, thereby saving his life.
