To Post or Not...?

I'm guilty of this as many of you probably are...

You rarely go beyond the first page. You look at the first page then make your post oblivious to the trash on that 2nd page, after all who reads the second page anyway?

So you post then realise after posting that a very brave soul has delved into the realm of page 2 and bumped up a thread on the exact same topic...

And you don't want to reply because it's 12 pages long and you've got a short attention span.

Admit it.

Are you talking about accidentally grave digging, or posting something that someone else already posted, or reading the first page only then posting?

Yes. If there's a point that needs addressing, I do so regardless of whether the thread is active or not.

Go on, someone admit to reading all 104 pages of the sexiest user thread.

I read entire debate threads for fun, usually without ever posting. Spammy threads I usually read the last few pages to see what kind of discussion is going on before I post, if it's a really long thread.

Grave-digging is pulling up an old thread when starting a new one is fine. I'm referring to the act of posting a new thread on a topic still active, whether intentional or not.

You could have just ignored my thread instead of telling me what to do.

I can make my post any length I want and if you don't like it well... tough luck!

So you admit to knowing nothing else? :p

I've done that too if it looks like a decent topic.

Oh... whoops. Um, I don't usually (ever) start threads, so no.

It happens. I've misread posts and made really asinine comments in the past. That is embarrassing. :)

Well, I post without checking, but on the rare occasions where I start threads, I try to be creativity, so I don't have to fear unoriginality.

Uh...? o_O;; Eh..?

Exactly how is the OP long? It's broken into short paragraphs, with one or two sentences per. In fact, it's pretty short as far as most OPs go. Why do people seem to think it's insanely long?

I typically won't post to a thread without reading the whole thread, but I rarely notice the post dates, so it's possible I'm engaging in necromancy by accident.

I also search the forum for threads in which I've posted to find responses to me, and I'll rebut those regardless of how long ago they occurred.

I've never heard necromancy used when referring to gravedigging. That's a good one. I'll have to remember that.

I'll rarely post in a longer thread if I haven't contributed early on, and I don't check to see if there's a similar thread when there's a fresh one on page one.

And frankly, although I don't participate in any forum gravedigging, I'm not entirely sure why everyone gets up in arms when it happens. Zombie threads need a healthy dose of brains once in a while. Was there a dark forum necromancer in the past that prompted the need for a strict no-gravedigging policy? Or do people just love the rules so much, that they jump at the first opportunity to run to moderation?

I believe it goes back to the days of the Great NSG Forum Purges. They would purge the forums when the threads spanned over 20+ pages. Anything remotely spammy got the axe. Many posts were often well-outdated and there were threads more relevant that were on the first few pages.

Well, I get that. Topics tend to get recycled, and it's better to have a fresh thread than the same old putrifying zombie thread with the same posters accordian-quoting each other. But I'm still amazed at the speed that people run to moderation at the sign of a thread dragging its corpse on to page one.

A-ha! I sees...

No, I actually don't do that, for several reasons:

1) I actually do venture onto page 2 (and even 3 and 4 and sometimes even 5  ) quite often.

2) I'm on NSG way too much so I usually know most of the threads at least from their titles.

3) If I post any News threads I always check all anal-retentively if it has already been posted.

4) Mostly, however, I simply don't post any News threads. :p

Threads can have multiple pages now...? Is this a new feature of vBulletin that I didn't know about?

I go into the next sets of pages. Well, usually I do. Though you still can't be confident you aren't repeating someone else's thread as they may have a title that doesn't give you any clue as to its contents. You just have to hope that you aren't going to have someone give you a thread link verifying your copycat status and making you look like a fool to all of General.

But that is all part of life here. Just have to deal. :)
