Best MODERN Songs Of All Time
Ahem. I started this thread originally, forgetting about classical music. Which in some people's opinions is going to be better then modern music, which is what I meant by the thread. So I decided to start this thread and let the classical-types have that thread.
So...I'm going to start by nominating "The Spirit of Radio" by Rush.

Through all time, obviously.
Oh lord, that is a massive amount of music threads you have racked up.
I'd like to change my answer from American Pie to Wish You Were Here. It has delicious acoustic and fantastic lyrics.

If modern means within the last couple years, I might nominate The Mars Volta's "Day of the Baphomets" and/or "Asilos Magdalena," both off of the album Amputechture.
however, as it doesn't seem to mean that, I have no clue...

Anyway, I 'nominate' "Carry On Wayward Son" by Kansas, and "Have You Ever Seen The Rain" by CCR (Creedence Clearwater Revival).

The state and the band are very similar: bland, boring, and possessing no highlights whatsoever.

I disagree besides Kansas being a very good band there is ONE Boston song worth considering, More Than a Feeling (btw not my pick). Just a very catchy song.
My pick is New Slang by The Shins, although I'll easily substitute that for something else of theirs. Very good band The Shins
Anywhoo if I've learned one thing about music is that there are very definite opinions and everybody hates everybody elses opinions.

Pretty songs, but they'd bore me even if I were on morphine.. well, unless it had an organ solo..
Not picking on you, you're just the first to suggest a song I hadn't heard.. I'm downloading while reading the thread. :p

Some songs I especially like, that aren't already "known to be great" as so many are.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Y Control
YYYs - Turn Into
Rainer Maria - Artificial Light
Alfredo Casero - Shima Uta
Gigi Di'Agostino - I'll Fly With You
La Oreja De Van Gogh - Por Que Te Vas?
Madreblu - Certamente

I'm at a transitional phase.. My taste in metal and the like has dissipated along with the hormones, and now with age.. I'm still open to it, but nothing's caught my eye lately. So I'm drifting toward the mellow, just slowly. ;) I like traditional rock if it's well done, all kinds of psychedelic and folk rock.. I've only recently gotten a computer that isn't shared, so I'm just beginning to download music again. I should have some favorites soon. :) I like playing traditional bouzouki taximia on the guitar, so I listen to a lot of that too.

They were big mainly in Britain. I dunno if they ever got major play over here.
Picked that song because it has a nice simple poppy sound with some pretty awesome and relevant lyrics. No whining about a girl not loving you back or the typical pop fare. Just a song about a topic that gets very little attention in the pop world: class.
And the Shatner version is also pretty good. :) But that's probably because he has Joe Jackson singing the chorus.

I think it's called The Prayer. It's the only thing by them I've ever heard, when a friend sent it to me in an effort to persuade me to listen to Radio 1. I got about half way through before I had to turn it off. It's awful.

First of all, without defining "modern", you manage to REALLY say that what you want is people's favorite radio-aired or live-gig played singles by popular music groups of the last forty years or so. Admit it. You're talking rock, basically, from roughly 1963 on. Stop trying to be all egalitarian about it. If you're really saying 1900, then you're opening up everything from Stephen Foster, Irving Berlin, Scott Joplin, Louis Armstrong, Bix Beiderbecke, George Gershwin, and on and on and on, and that's just popular music -- stuff that was in shows before radio and on radio in its infancy.
1900 would include serialist songs by Arnold Schoenberg, and I KNOW you couldn't give a shit about that.
Hmm best songs of all modern time:
Song 2 - Blur
Plug in Baby - Muse
My Generation- The Who
Club Foot - Kasabian
And a lot of Frank Sinatras stuff. Great guy.

"Strange Fruit" by Abel Meeropol, sung by Billie Holiday.
Southern trees bear a strange fruit,
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root,
Black body swinging in the Southern breeze,
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees.
Pastoral scene of the gallant South,
The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth,
Scent of magnolia sweet and fresh,
And the sudden smell of burning flesh!
Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck,
For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
For the sun to rot, for a tree to drop,
Here is a strange and bitter crop.
Now THAT's a song.
"Woodstock" as performed by Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.
