Today is International Workers' Day. I'll be attending a rally and march with my union. How about you? Will you be doing somethging labor oriented, something "loyalty" oriented, or neither?

Holy poop it is going to be May Day tommorow. I suppose I ought to phone up my local Communist Party and get in on one of thier crazy activities.

Neither. While I don't have any problem with organized labour, I dislike the artificial and false dichotomy of "worker" and "boss". It's a holdover from primitive marxist theory we should be past by now.

We've already got Labor Day, I don't see why I should bother with a holiday which is associated with the Russkie's rolling out the tanks and missiles for a parade.
I will be celebrating capitalism on May Day, just like I do every day.

In my country it's just a reason for people to go for picnics and make a lot of garbage.I won't be doing that.

Are you kidding? I loved those parades! The Soviet's really knew how to throw a military show.
I'd even go on to say that thier parades where perhaps almost as good as the Queen's Birthday festivities.

I attended a rally two years ago but won't do it tomorrow(and it was a commie/socialist rally). It's a non-religious holiday and I get two days off from school, how can I not like it?

It's really unforntunate that May Day became so associated with the left labor movement to the extent that Ike declared it Loyalty Day. :(

I will be marching in a traditional procession. Solidarity is important, and it's a public holiday so I'm free to do it anyway.

What do you want it to be associate with? Its not exactly the day of the right wing movement.

Excellent. Fass, you and I disagree enough that it's nice to sit back and appreciate the points where we do agree...

In the US it got so associated with communism that the regular unionists celebrate labor day on a completely different day. Not all unionist and labor activists are lefties. (Points to myself as an example of a righty unionist. I'm almost certainly the most economically right leaning member of my branch of my union.)

Well, while I myself am not going to count as a worker/labourer, my parents and theirs before them and so on do, and I won't forget their struggles so easily.

I've never associated May 1 with anything else than left wing movements and I don't find any reason to do so since it's almost always been left wing movements that have marched in 1:st may rallies.

Ignoring the whole thing, really. I am drawn to neither the concept of "Loyalty Day" because I'm too ambivalent about the current administration, nor the concept of "May Day" because there hasn't been a "worker" in my familial line since my Great Grandfather.

tomorrow is the day that the city picks up all the big trash people have, so today I am dragging out all the stuff I have that's too big for my trash bucket, and tomorrow I am driving around before the trash man comes to see what I can snag from other people's trash heaps (last year I got an appliance box that we made into a puppet stage and some wheels from a stroller that we fixed our wagon with, and a lattice for my garden, and a wading pool)
a friend of mine got a broken bunkbed today that she is making into an outdoor club house for her kids. ;)
I really wish more people would use freecycle.

It actually is a masonic movement from USA in an attempt to limit access for immigrants, women and colour people to work places-it enforced 8 hour labor day and minimum wage.Or so i've heard :)

For anyone who's a worker, let's be grateful that braver folks than us fought to enshrine basic rights and dignities. For anyone who's an employer, let's hope that you value the contributions of those you employ, and also that you earn the reward you deserve. For anyone who's still in education, let's hope that you will find work that's fulfilling and provides you with what you need when the time comes. For anyone who stays at home and looks after the kids, let's hope people accord you the immense respect and appreciation you deserve. For anyone who's too ill to work, let's hope better and healthier times are ahead. For anyone who's none of the above, let's hope that some day you'll find what you're searching for.
Happy 1st May, everyone.

For me, May Day is Beltane, and the founding of the SCA. What the hell AS will it be this year, anyway?

Attending my two classes tomorrow and preparing for finals. That is about it. May Day is of no interest to me.

Sodai gomi day! (That's "big trash" day in Japanese.) I know lots of people who've furnished their apartments here that way. It's especially convienient in March and April, when people move due to job transfers and find it easier to just throw out old furnishings rather than drag them along.)

I'll be doing my last bit of work for the term for my union job tomorrow. I suppose that will be a celebration of sorts. ;)
There's a May Day event at the university today, basically a joint assembly of Marxists, anarchists, democratic socialists, and progressives. Truth be told, the only actual Marxists or anarchists, though, are a friend and me, at least as far as I know.
I won't be doing anything :)
Yay laziness!
i don't have to go to school today. yesterday i went out, the party was bad for it's price. today i'm going to study a bit, be lazy and maybe some fun stuff later.

DANCE MOTHERFUCKER!!!!!!! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maypole_dance)
Yeah, that's what I'll do for "May Day", I'll set up a Maypole, bust out the booze and celebrate my long-distant, totally extinct and totally irrelevant pagan heritage, not out of celebrating the heritage itself, but due to the fact that I can use it as an excuse to get plas-tered!

Sadly it's not really acknowledged here. I'm sure there were rallies on, but they would have been small. I've been really out of touch with the movement lately (well, not just that - lots of things) since I finished university. Be nice if it were a public holiday, that way people might be able to organise stuff.
well, it's May Day now... and in Hawaii, it's Lei Day.

In the country in which i live, there was recently a case of a young woman who died because of too much work and exhaustion. She was a manager at some multinational corporation and a workaholic. So basically this is the main topic on worker's day at us.Lots of people come on tv and tell us how much we work and how we sacrifice our health to gain money.Probably people do that but personally,i wouldn't do that for anything,i hold my life too dear to endanger it for money. Not to mention it's kinda pointless, to have a shitty life exactly because you work for a better life.
what is the IMF?

Wolfowitz is head of the World Bank, it's a different organization.

Since Venezuela's debts to the IMF were already paid off in full, this was nothing but another pbulicity stunt by everyone's favorite asstard.
Nationalizing oil companies could get his ass shot though, can't say I'd lose any sleep over it either.
