Poll: Do you live where you were born?

I'm curious about this. I'm sorry that the poll doesn't really mean much to those still living with their parents who haven't had the opportunity to choose where they live, but of course you're still welcome to answer.

Note: this is a MULTIPLE-CHOICE question!

My sister lives on the other side of the world (London mostly), while I'm still living within 100 km of where I was born. We're very different; mainly, she's ambitious and extroverted, while I'm reclusive. Proving she was one of the best just wasn't much of a challenge to her, in the small cultural pond of Australia. I on the other hand like a quiet life, and it's convenient to live near my mum. I'm 43, and I'll vote options 2, 3 and 10.

Now I've heard a few US posters on here talking about "going to college." That often seems to involve moving some distance (out of commuting range) and living away from their family and childhood friends. Is it something you do because you have to, for your education or career? Or is it just an excuse to cut the ties and strike out on your own?

Recognizing that some countries are smaller than others (looking at you Britons haha) I decided not to define "away from where you live" in terms of miles or kilometres, but as a proportion of the country (same town/next town/half-way across/other side of the country.)

Some people move out of their country of birth altogether. Perhaps their country really sucked to live in (war, genocide, poverty or plain boredom) or perhaps they just wanted to 'strike out' big time. If there were more options to a poll, I'd include "moved to another country, with another language" but as it is, I'll just ask you to write it in.

Tell us why you moved, if you did. Tell us why you came back, if you did. Is it a rite-of-passage to move away from your home town/suburb and make it in the big wide world? Is it a career decision? Were you fleeing something, or seeking something, or just messing around? Let's go ...

I still live in the city of my birth. In fact, the three houses I have lived in are only a few kilometres from each other.

well techincally i was born just north of london, but we never really lived there - it was just the best hospital for dealing with the birth complications my mum had...

however, i do still live with my parents now. i'm 21.
i moved accross the country to Cardiff University in Wales, some 160 miles or so.... quite far by british standards :p studied economics and politics for two years before dropping out due to depression and stuff, and now am back with my parents.

so, to answer your question, i live "where i was born", with my parents, in the same town as i grew up, yes. but i have moved away in the past.

I still live in the same state that I was born in, but I never lived in the city I was born in. I was born in Ocala and lived in Inverness until right after second grade, when I moved to my current location.

I was born on an Indian reserve where all you could hope for was to live on welfare and being drunk. It did not suit me. My uncles and cousins are probably all dead by now and I have no reason to keep in touch. They have lived their lives the way they had learned to grow up. 50 years ago, I moved to town and will never return.

Now that's a story! "50 years ago" is a phrase not often seen on NSG.

I've never lived in one place for very long. I've lived in 5 different states and in those 5 states, I've lived in a total of 11 different cities.

Currently my hometown (where I was born) is Lansing, Michigan but I only lived in Michigan the first three years of my life and hardly remember it so I consider Miami, Florida my home town since I have the most memories there.

I've lived on my own since I was 17. I graduated highschool a year early and did my own thing ever since, dispite what my parents thought. I waited till I was 22 to go back to school. I saw no point in going to college when I didn't wanna be there. My grades would show that and since I'm paying for it and didn't know what I wanted to do, it would have been a waste of my money. Now I'm living back at home, which is currently Virginia, and going to school and work full time. It's been rough but I'll have my Science degree and graduate in the summer of 09 ... hoepfully.

Moving has been something I've done my whole life and I've hated every minute of it. Where ever I end up next after school is where I will grow old and die so I'm considering where I want to live. I'm a country boy at heart but I love the city life so it's tough for me to choose :p

I was born in Norfolk Virginia, and since have lived in Florida, North Carolina, and finally Pennsylvania. My family seems to have pretty much settle here in PA. I moved away from "home" for 2 years to attend college, got my degree came back fro lack of money. I never did get a real job in my field and now I'm a radio DJ living in what I consider 'home'.

I moved away from Brooklyn in December, to a city two or so hours north. Same state, and I still keep in touch with friends in NYC, and I go down to visit often, but overall I'm much happier in my new house, as are my parents, I think.

I moved away from home when I left for university. Almost to the opposite side of the country, in fact.
I go back once a year for christmas, sometimes more often than that if something comes up.
I'm definitely not going to move back.

I moved with my family from the city of my birth (Sudbury, Ont.) when I was 12, and have been living in Oshawa for the last 20 years. I haven't had any particular reason to leave, as the work has been here, as well as friends and family.

I was born and bred in Donaghadee, Northern Ireland but i've been living in Dundee, Scotland for the past two years without returning home. I haven't been back because of a strained relationship with my Mum but recently a few things have happened to show me that she cares a lot more than I thought. Therefore i'm planning on heading back home in about a month. Its gonna be good to get back

At the moment, as my location thingy indicates, I'm living in Sheffield, as I go to uni here; I was born in North London, but I've lived for all bar the first three and the last 8 months of my life in North Essex. So... I'm about 200 miles from my hometown, atm.

Maybe it's the fact that I've just woke up, but your poll makes it sound as if everyone hates their home town.

I'm still in school, haven't had the option to move. OR, moving wasn't my choice.

This is what I would have voted for, but you're making it sound as if I'm forced to stay here. I love where I live.

If the UK were to become the 51st state then it would be the 11th largest state in terms of area, but the most populated state by far - nearly twice the population as that of California.

I was born in London. I've lived in various places, including outside of the UK. Though I love London I'd continue wanting live in many different places just to see what it's like. Top of my list is Barcelona.

I'm not sure which poll option applies to me. I've moved away from and then back to my "home town" a couple of times. I've just recently moved away again. I plan this move to be permanent.

As to Americans going away to college, very few actually do. Most go to college within a short drive from home and stay with their parents. Seems almost every county has a college in it, even if it's only a junior college. Going away to college is mostly just a plot device in movies and books. Those who do go away tend to be from wealthy and upper middle class families. The rest of us can't afford it.

Nope I don't live in the hospital, heck, the one I was born in doesn't even exist anymore (it was merged with a different hospital nearby).

I do live in the same metropolitan aea, though.

Aside from the hospital, I was "born" one town over and moved to this one a few years ago. Same high school, different middle school. So I keep in contact with mostly everyone from my first town since I still see all of them everyday at school. As for college, I'm going to a school thats very much in commuting distance, but I'll be living there. It's the best place for me: it's got what I want, it's close to home but I can live there, and a number of my friends will be very close.

I don't remember ever living in the city in which I was born--Houston, Texas. I have few memories of living in Texas at all, relatively speaking, because I was six when I left and I moved around a lot in that time frame. I consider the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain my home town, since I lived in that area for about 23 years, but I wouldn't move back. I don't want to live in a small town ever again. I'm a city person.
