I don't know if this has been posted or discussed already, but for people like me who're paranoid lunatics about the whole "Mayan 2012 prediction," could this be it? Could a solar flare detonate every nuke on the planet and send us to oblivion, or could it just make your chicken a little more crispy?

Paranoia much?

I don't think it will happen. The Mayans may have predicted that that's when we're all gonna go poof, but then again, that waas a long, long, long time ago. And the world didn't end on 6/6/06, so why should it end now?

How could a solar flare detotate a nuclear bomb?

It's the general gist of the Mayans predicted the end in 2012 and the storm will happen in 2012.

Also, a leap year will happen then.

OK, there's no way the Mayans knew about nuclear weapons. That's just silly.

I think it's supposed to occur in August of 2012, so I guess the Mayans were a little off if this was supposed to mark the start of their new era. The worst it will to is mess with GPS and satellite communications at times, and maybe cause some slight fluctuations in global climate during that timeframe, but hardly anything out of the ordinary or dangerous.

Maybe they were magical mayans. Didn't consider that, did you?

Of course they didn't, they just said the world would die in 2012.

Yeah, but that happened in the 1600's as well; not too much happened then. Actually, things got a whole lot better in the period of 1611-2012 as compared to 1210-1611. IIRC, the end of the calendar isn't for a very, very long time...if humans can't get off this rock in that amount of time and survive its destruction, we deserve to go extinct.

No they didn't. Stop propagating this myth. Do some research, please. The Mayan calender doesn't stop in 2012, it restarts another long count, or "b'ak'tun". The Mayan apocalypse is listed as the equivalent of 4772AD.

Does the Mayan calendar actually end on 2012? I'm sure I read somewhere that it doesn't end until much later and 2012 is merely the end of the second-to-last period. I could be completely wrong...

The solar storm will reach our planet and destroy all information stored in electronic format. That will erase all computers, efectivaly destroying a lot of knowledge, research and restarting the internet.

Chaos will happen for a while until everything go back to normality.

No it won't. Hard drives are Faraday cages.

I disagree. The solar flare, in fact, will NOT reach our planet but stop halfway there, rotate sixty degrees in an abitrary direction, and then continue.

OK that answers my question (I hope its only above my post because of time warp and not just lack of observation on my part).

The Earth's magnetic field will absorb and deflect the effects.

From what I have read on the Mayan predictions are that a new world will start in this time frame. That could mean a whole bunch of different things. Maybe some radical technological advances in that year will transform the world. I don't believe the world will "end". I think that is a load of crap.

It's actually the end of the eighth to last period, I believe. It's not even close to the actual end.

A 12-member panel charged with forecasting the solar cycle said Wednesday it is evenly split over whether the peak will be 90 sunspots or 140 sunspots.
An average solar cycle ranges from 75 to 155 sunspots.
Seems to me that 90-140 falls within 75-155 so this isn't so much out of the ordinary as it is the high end of the ordinary.

I wouldn't be at all suprised that if the Mayan civilization were still in its prime today they'd be making a new caladar.

Think inside the sphere.

I'm confused. Is the cylinder inscribed in the sphere then?
