To be fair, most non-Abrahamic religions havent been so violent, or at least havent commited enough violence to compete with the followers of Islam and Christianity. Think Jainism. And Muhammad is probably the least pleasant figure out of the major world religions, so just be thankful that most Muslims ignore his violent side and stick to his peaceful teachings.

Actually, I would argue that the Sharia mitigated a lot of the punishments from the Old testament, so it would have been an improvement at the time. Granted, that I severely dislike a huge portion of Islamic scripture, and am not very sympathaetic towards the religion.

What led you to the conclusion that all religions are based on peace? I don't think so, and certainly not in the case of Islam. Note that this is not a generalisation on my part by making statements such as all Muslims are violent, just that Muhammad used Islam as a political tool to amass as much power and land he could within his lifetime, and that much of what he said and did is far removed from what one would consider ethical, or indeed peaceful.

Aunty Maiduguri told the BBC the reports of her wedding were false, and that she was not a lesbian.

Islam does not try to spread itself through the sword as there is no complusion in religion and throughout history violence involving Muslims has only taken place as an act of self-defence by Muslims. The cartoons as well as reactions to the Pope's comments were perhaps overreactions(to very offensive things I would add), and not a sign of Islam trying to spread through the sword.

However, Islamic societies are pulling this kind of shit now...that's where the problem lies.
